As described, these sturdy post bases are designed to be anchored in concrete. The welded-on 7" x 5/8" rebar should work well for that, although care needs to be taken that the bottom plate is horizontal when placed, since there's no way to adjust it after the wet concrete has hardened. If the base isn't horizontal you'll have a tilted post.I plan to try a no-concrete application. I will drill 5/8 inch holes in a green treated 2 x 6 plank, then insert the anchor bars through the plank and into our heavy clay soil. This will both anchor the posts and stabilize the plank by preventing it from moving around on the ground. My only concern is that the posts could become slightly tilted if the anchor bars loosen when the soil is wet--e.g., after heavy rain. Such tilting can be prevented by attaching the bottom plate of each bracket to the 2 x 6 plank with #12 pan head screws. The brackets will then be anchored both to the plank and the ground. The bottom plates of the brackets were unfortunately not made with screw holes, so I'll need to drill holes in the 3/32" thick steel plates. This will take some time and effort, but I think it will work!
