Good product. I think my ground is too soft for this route, but it’s a good temporary fix!

I have used posts like this in the past to build a small fence around my pool equipment to shield it from view of the street. This one is to add a post for stringing lights over the pool. The concept is simple. You just drive the spike into the ground and then screw in the 4x4 post to the cup. This one is a two-piece design, where you attach the cup to the spike using the supplied bolts. Then, they include screws to anchor the 4x4 post to the spike's cup. There are two ways to anchor the spike. First, you can dig a hole and fill it with concrete with the spike in the ground; there is a hole halfway down the long spike to aid in stability. Or, second, you can simply drive the spike into the ground and attach the post once the spike / base is in place - that was my approach. I found it easiest to attach the cup to the spike and drive it into the ground using a throw-away piece of wood (and checking along the way to ensure it's straight / vertical); but there are surely other methods that will work too. Once the spike is in the ground, you simply secure the post in place using the included lag screws. This is a great option for when you don't want to go to all the hassle of digging a big hole and filling it with concrete. Instead you just drive the stake into the ground (though, admittedly, the concrete option provides the most secure and stable installation). In my case, since the post will not need to support any significant weight I'm good with the driving-the-stake-directly-into-the-ground option. This is also a good choice if you want to install a small section of fencing or for any other scenario where you need to add a 4x4 post to the ground, but don't want to invest a lot of time and effort into holes and concrete and the like.

Very well made, appropriate gauge on the metal and powder coat seems like it'll help this to last a while.

Perfect for a 4x4 post. Easy to install, excellent value for me, means I don’t have to dig an hole… excellent quality it’s holding up a 4x4x8’ column, and we didn’t lose the hight thanks to this product. Which means we can add lights, bird feeders, bird baths and hang flowers on the 4x4. Functional for many uses, plus it’s strong and durable and don’t believe it’ll break, or bend in stormy weather. It’s actually very practical, and I’m so glad to have found it. Thanks!

First note: Do not use a utility blade to open the box, you may scar the powder coated finish on the cup portion of the post anchor. The spike is wrapped in loose plastic bag, but the cup is not covered in any way. This two-part system is interesting. You drive the spike into the ground then attach the cup followed by installing the post. In-ground spike is16 ¼” spike. The instructions say to wet the ground to make driving the stake easier. Yes, it will but consider that the post will then be less stable. It is necessary to drive the water/air out of the soil to pack the post into a more permanent position. A shovel handle is helpful for this. You may even want to temporarily attach auxiliary braces from the post to the ground, which will also assist in setting the post level and plumb. Hardware and instructions are included for attaching the post cup to the spike. The cup itself is roughly 5 1/2” tall.I find the 2-part system to be a bit fiddly. If I really wanted to add braces to each axis of the post, I’d pour concrete or backfill with gravel depending on the soil type and post use.

We've been buying these type of post holders for years for all sorts of projects and have never seen one that is a 2 piece design. It's my fault as I didn't scroll down far enough on the product page to notice that. Generally the purpose behind these stakes is to eliminate the need to dig holes and, yet, this offers instructions on digging a hole and using concrete which seems counterintuitive. I'm not sure how I feel about the 2 piece design as the top plate is bolted to the bottom stake, the post inserted in and then screwed to the top portion. As of now the hub seems to like it and thinks install will be easier but he hasn't thoroughly looked at it yet. Time will tell as this won't go in the ground until late spring.

I'm knocking some stars off cause the box is mislabeled. I ordered a 4x4 fence post anchor and I received a 6x6 fence post anchor. Returned it for a replacement and received another 6x6 fence post anchor. I don't really like having to take something out of the box and measure it to make sure that I don't keep getting the wrong item cause the outside of the box is labeled 6x6. Not a fan of that. Especially when I need to get this project done. That pushes me back on what I need to use it for. I expect that when I order something, I don't have to jump through hoops to get the item that I ordered. I would say that price is competitive with big box stores. I would shop around. Quality is competitive with other brands. It is two separate pieces so that you can drive the post in most of the way first and then add the post holder.
