Good steel and nice handle. The factory grinds are not very good, but it's not too difficult to correct it.

Yes you have to sharpen them. They are worth every penny.

These are worthless. Some comments say you can maybe hone them and sharpen them if you have the proper sharpenings tools (which you will need for any chisel) and skill. But, I'd say don't bother. They truly are trash. It's mild steel or something because it won't hold a edge... at all. Not even remotely. Eastern white pine literally crumbled the tip and totally dulled/dented the edge. The shafts aren't square, true, plumb, whatever. Nothing is of acceptable quality even for a low price.

Bought these assuming that knowing what I am doing, I should be able to make this cheap set usable. And I was. However, it took much longer than I expected. The bevels aren't even perpendicular to the handle. I don't have a grinder, so I'd have to reshape on my diamond stones, which would take longer than is worth it. So I sharpened them on the diamonds and stropped them. They come out sharp after removing the machine marks, but alas they're not exactly straight, and for now I'll just live with that. I can live with that for hand-carving spoons, but I wouldn't recommend for any precision work.

Comme je le disais dans le titre il s'agit un acier plus que médiocre mais en même temps au vu du prix je ne m'attendais pas à autre chose. Affûtées elles sont bien fonctionnelles et se révèlent pratiques pour un débutant comme moi.

Cheaply made, hastily sharpened. Some time on the sharpener and they will be fit for work.

Absolute rubbish. Made of mild steel. Will not take or hold an edge. Fit and finish is rough. Unusable.

A pleasant surprise. These chisels look and feel great. 9 inches long with a robust handle that seems proper for striking with a wooden mallet. Im looking forward to carving with these. They are not sharp at all. It will take some time to hone them, but I was expecting that.At this price, I am considering buying a second set to ground with inchannel bevels.

For $18 these are great. Finish isn't amazing and for some reason the second biggest gouge has the largest radius, while the largest gouge has about the same radius as the second smallest, which is a bit odd. As other reviews say they come no where near sharp, but after about 10 minutes with a grinder and about an hour with sharpening stones I was able to get a good edge on them all. Once sharp they're all solidly build and work great for the low price.

This came SERIOUSLY dull.Actually, I wouldn't really call it dull, it's more like unfinished... where it's easily half a millimeter thick on the thickest point of the "cutting edge"... and yes, the thickness on the cutting edge is not even.I knew what I'm getting into when purchasing this though, so did some serious sharpening on this (refer to Paul Sellers' youtube channel on how to sharpen a gouge, if you don't know how) and now it works great and looks like it would last for years! For people who are still deciding whether to get this or other, fancier options: I'd much rather spend my $100 on diamond sharpening blocks and stropping leather, and spend $10 here, as opposed to spending $100+ on chisel/gouges. They need sharpening anyway so you can't really escape the cost of the sharpening tools and the material on this gouge is carbon steel which is the same material on quality gouges - you're pretty much spending all those extra dollars on marketing and factory sharpening (I have yet to know a factory sharpened chisel/gouge that is really good enough to work with right out of the box, and like I said they need periodical sharpening anyway).
