Step one: throw the instructions away.... the instruction page says that you want to work from the bottom up, but I had a really hard time getting everything lined up correctly. I ended up ignoring the instructions and working from the top down. Otherwise you're trying to get everything squared without any indication of height. So if you work from the top down it's very intuitive. Also, when tightening during installation, take note of the photo I attached, the clamp can get caught up in the housing, so make sure to fold that in as you go.Once I realized the instructions were making my life harder, and I begun to logic my way through it, it was actually quite simple to assemble this and only took 5 to 10 minutes.I feel the quality is lacking only due to the unnecessary number of pieces, this would be so much more sturdy and probably last a lot longer if this was all welded together as one to two pieces. The sizing versatility sounds like a great idea, but when it came to installation only caused more problems. We ended up having to use sheet metal screws to attach it to the top of the chimney because the design isn't form-fitting enough, it's not tight enough to have confidence in its ability to stay put.I will say, in spite of all of that, I think that this will last a decent amount of time and do its job in keeping birds and debris out, in addition to being a decent replacement for our worn out one. I'm not sure how well it will hold up over time in our 40 to 70 mph winds, I would feel more confident if it were fewer pieces. But really, now that it's installed, the hard part is over.Overall, if you're looking for something that you can easily adjust in width and don't have a lot of concern for severe weather, this might work beautifully for you for a very long time to come.

So, once you are able to release it from all the tape, it was pretty straightforward to assemble. The instructions were useless, but I just used the picture. If you are at all handy, you don't really need the instructions to figure it out.It fit my 6" stove pipe fine and looks like it will do a fine job on my coal stove. This seems like it was priced well and cheaper than similar items at the big box stores. Being Stainless steel means it should not rust and will look much nicer than my old one.

Vine items carry hefty tax implications, so I appreciated that this seemed fairly priced - that makes it a better value in my opinion, and is the reason this is four stars instead of only three stars. The initial dealing with this to get it put together was a mess. It came with a super-thin tinfoil style tape on the edges of the hardware screen. That tape had come loose and was stuck to the plastic that was wrapped around the parts. It was a mess just getting this free from the plastic and fully out of the box. With hundreds of sharp edges from the hardware mesh that wanted to catch the included gloves and pull on the material of the gloves as well as the packaging materials, this was just a pain.Once I got all the parts out, it was pretty straightforward. The included instructions seemed to be for a different cap and also seemed incomplete (there was no mention of attaching the actual cap to the rest of the unit). The video included in the listing is for a different cap than I received as well. Not a big deal, but something to note if DIY isn’t your thing. The included nuts and bolts were easy to attach and self-tightened easily and locked down nicely. The listing says the attachment strap has a range of 0.4 inches, but really, the range is much bigger if you know what you are doing when you install the hardware mesh, so if your chimney is slightly smaller than 5.9 inches stated in the listing, you should be okay (I stuck mine on a 5.75” to 5.8” pipe, and could easily have snugged it onto a slightly smaller pipe).Overall, I’m frugal, so I’d do this again. While the metal is not “hardy,” assuming it is not going to rust and the welds are strong, I figure it should last. If the welds pop or this turns to rust right away, I’ll update this review. If I were not frugal, the convenience of just getting a nicer, pre-assembled cap at a hardware store would be the route I would go, but the price difference between the stores’ caps and this one was significant, so I went with this cap.
