I had an always open error on my furnace I went to the sites manufacturer, to get the OEM replacementit had been changed to this. it looked a little different with the sensor on the end that went into the furnacethan the old. My heat has had no problems since replacing. Before the fan ran and the gas would not come on.it's a safety to stop your furnace getting too hot in a failure problem. Once the switch goes open it has been trippedIf it doesn't close again it won't let your gas run.
