This is a functional and inexpensive IEEE 1394 (Firewire 400) cable - typically you would use this to connect your iLink-style camcorder to a computer - or more commonly, connect a Firewire 400 scanner to a laptop with a "mini" firewire port (like a Dell e6400). It's simple, it's not ugly, and it works!
