The absolute coolest book of many in my library. I could not recommend it enough, especially for children of any age. I have no doubt my interest in learning as well as my grades would have been greatly enhanced had this book been available back in my school days. Just terrific!

I loved this Audio book so much I bought one for my mom. I have listened to it at least 10 times (I do lots of road trips) and never tire of Bill Bryson's narrative voice, wit, and humor.

I've learned a lot about the basics of science and the universe but even more important, it placed many things I know into perspective and filled in the historical background. A very easy listen, either driving or walking, where I can stop anytime and pick right back up.

Gave this audio version as a gift to a friend that does a lot of driving. This is a super book and even at over 400 pages is a page turner. Lost a few hours of sleep reading and worth it.

An absolutely fascinating account of nearly everything! Highly recommend ALL things Bill Bryson! He’s a joy to read and listen to!

This is my second set of these - I loaned my 1st set to someone and cannot remember who and have never seen them since. Bill Bryson did such a good job with the story line and his own narration (what a wry sense of humor and lilt in his voice!) that my wife and I have listened to these about 3 times over the years and I wanted a new set because I know at some point I will want to listen to the CDs again (and, probably, again). All his short examples of the quirks of life, discovery, invention and happenstance are easy to understand and absorb - and often chuckle over. I highly recommend these CDs.

I am giving it 3 stars, because it is well researched. It is no easy task to tie together the discoveries of so many scientists into a 6-hour audiobook. I had some 'ah-ha' moments, but they were few and far between. If you are a casual science buff who likes to understand the big picture, and not necessarily every name, date, and minor story along the way, then this book is NOT for you.Bryson speeds through hundreds of names and events, most of which you have never heard of, nor will ever hear of again. I wish there was more focus on the actual science and implications of the theories. The pace at which this book moves from one trivial anecdote/person to another is so fast that only those with photographic memories will be able to retain more than 10% after reading this book.I understand the book has to have some general appeal to sell. Most people incorrectly equate quantity of facts with quality. While such tidbits may impress someone at a dinner party, they are more likely to be forgotten.

I have heard both versions of the book. The first was from audible.com (from a friend), and the second from the audio tapes I purchased from amazon. I liked the audible version better. The reason was that the audible version was unabrigged while the other was missing lots of infomation. The abrigged version introduced the inforamation extremely fast. I couldn''t understand some of the information presented because I felt there were gaps.Another reason I liked the audible version was because it was read by Richard Matthews who really took it slowly, carefully, and clearly. The abrigged version was read by the author, and it was too fast, and some times distorted. I had to rewind the tape several times to understand what the author was saying.
