Product Description

Ultra-portable production pad. The LPD8 laptop pad controller is a USB-MIDI controller for musicians, producers, DJs and other music creators. It measures less than 13 inches across and weighs less than a pound to easily fit into a laptop case, backpack or messenger bag for extreme portability. The LPD8 is based on Akai Professional’s MPC line of iconic music production stations. Producers who love the feel of the MPC and want to work with software on their computer will find that the LPD8 gives their laptop the controls they prefer over a mouse and keyboard. The LPD8 has eight orange light-up pads that are velocity sensitive for programming rhythmic or melodic parts. The pads can also send program-change information to software. Additionally, the LPD8 has eight assignable Q-Link knobs you can assign to virtually any parameters in their software for hands-on control. The LPD8 works plug and play with Mac and PC and requires no software driver installation or wall power for operation. It has four memory banks for programming and recalling settings appropriate to different software programs you use. Make music in any setting with the LPD8.

I actually bought the LPD8 to control my FX banks on my Traktor Kontrol S2 Mk3 which doesn't come with a dedicated fx section. I mapped it to control all my FX on the LPD8.Then, began the fun.I wondered if I could map it so that, I can DJ with just the LPD8. I used the program change function on the LPD8 to map all 4 deck controls with 3 band EQ, mixer FX (I already have the full 2 banks of FX on Prog1, remember?), mixer FX selector, play - cue buttons, full-on loop controls. All this on prog 2. I still have 2 progs left😅Now, I can play wherever I am with just the LPD8 🤩For producers,The pad velocity sensitivity is a bit high. You may have to adjust to the product. But nevertheless, it's a great product. Value for the money as well !!

This is my third attempt in finding a midi controller solution for my needs. If you read my previous review on the Nektar GX61 you will have an idea. If not, the story is much like Goldy Lox and the Three Bears.Porridge is to hot, too cold, bed is too whatever, just not the right fit.The Akai LPD8 coupled with the NEKTAR GX 61 is perfect for me.Really Happy about this.Let me say that this Akai unit feels solid. Small is good here. The knobs feel nice, pads feel good. Fits perfectly with the Nektar controller I just purchase.I am choosing to play with this without the editor. I did download the editor after playing with the unit within Cubase. It worked well as it learned the controls I want to manipulate. After downloading the Akai Librarian softare and made changes in my device menu, the Akai unit and Nektar were not responding. I didn't want to waste hours figuring out why, so I deleted the Libririan software.Works good for now as I want to delve more in CC's ,program changes, assignments and banks. The quality for the price point is quite satisfactory. I am content with how both units operate and I still have room on my desk while now back to a 61 key baby.I'm ticked pink.Thank you Akai, Nektar and Amazon.Amazon, you are what we studied in business, a major category KILLER.I'm okay with that as long as you carry my food items one day and air my cooking show! Thanks!

This controller is great. The only problem with this controller is that I want more of them.Where do I start with the positives here? Well OK compatibility. It works without any driver (although to assign the controllers you may want to use the supplied application). It works on Mac OS X Mountain Lion (I believe that it would also work on most if not all previous versions of OS X). I know that it also works on Windows 8 (and again I believe that it would also work on most previous Windows versions). I use it daily in Ableton and is great to give you hands on control of software synths (VST's). It's pretty user friendly to set these things up with a shallow learning curve. One very important thing I thought I would mention is the pads on these are really responsive. I also oen an AKAI MPD18 trigger pad. I wanted this because I wanted to be able to add percussion to my tracks. I personally prefer the trigger pads on the LPD8. They seem surprisingly responsive and as an added bonus they light up when you hit them. I know that may seem superficial but it really seems to add an element of feedback interaction that 'confirms' your beats. I think it helps to visually see that they are working. Anyway they are pretty responsive and velocity sensative too.I use this all the time and as I have already said I just want more. I don't think it would be a problem to have several of these things with each one possibly assigned to a different VSTi or maybe use just one for a mixer with the ability to mute tracks with the pads as on/off toggles.I am very impressed with this dinky little unit. Also with a little extension cable you can pass it to friend whilst you manipulate something else on screen or play another synth. The price is very good considering the control that it gives you. I would regard this as essential for anyone who uses something like Ableton Live or Cubase (or whatever). It truly is a bargain

I picked this up with a midi keyboard controller and it's a perfect compliment to it. While you could easily use your keyboard to program drums, it's not nearly as much fun and as easy as it is on the LPD8.The only thing I would like to see improved on this is the instructions. The programming software for the LPD8 presets is anything but intuitive for a new user. A little time and patience and you'll be able to figure it out, or if you don't care you can just ignore it for awhile. The LPD8 does work out of the box without messing with the presets. The other thing I don't quite understand is why the top row of knobs on the right, control the bottom row of pads on the left by default. (And top pads controlled by bottom knobs) Again, not a huge deal and it's something you can change in the presets once you figure that out.Out of the box I've used this with Ableton Live, Superior Drummer and BFD. I can already tell I'm going to eventually want to figure the presets out clearly as I want the knobs to alter different settings than they do by default. The way the pads light up when you hit them not only lets you know if you didn't hit it hard enough (it won't light up) but it's also fun to see. It's kind of hard to explain how small this really is so I suggest you take a look at YouTube videos to get an idea. It's extremely light and portable. The one downside to that is it doesn't cover much space on the surface it's sitting on, so if it's not rather smooth, you're going to get some wobble when you use it.

I'm a digital DJ looking to extend the number of buttons and knobs for my extra virtual decks. These are the pros:*Price. I got this for $55 including next-day shipping. If I had gotten a device that was a giant pain to use, this still probably would have been a decent price, but what I got is much more so I'd say this is a steal.*4 programmable presets. I didn't re-program them, but right off the bat you are able to switch between the 4 defaults. This basically means I have up to 32 pads and 32 knobs (that's right, the knobs can be re-used as different knobs in a different preset). I personally mapped all 4 programs to send the same knob signal, since I didn't want them to change, but it's cool to know you could have that much control.*Backlit velocity-sensitive drumpads. When you tap the pads, they light up.*Control quality. The knobs turn nicely and the pads feel like they'll last a long time.*Build quality. It isn't exactly made of steel but it feels pretty rugged. Nothing wiggles at all.*Size. This thing is less wide than my laptop and only about 2 inches deep.Cons:*The "backlit" drumpads can't be backlit via MIDI signals. This may not be a huge deal, but for me I was hoping to program 2 of the pads to act as "toggles". I had hoped sending the signal back would light the pad up (similar to most dj controllers and the apc40/monome/launchpad), but they only light up when you touch them. This kind of sucks*The drumpads seem to behave a little strangely sometimes. For the most part, I can roll my fingers on as fast as I want and it'll keep up, but occasionally if I'm rolling 2 pads pretty fast one will get kind of "stuck", as if I had never released it. I can't be 100% sure this isn't my software, but I've never had this behavior before and everything I'm checking seems to indicate otherwise
