I've flattened 3 of my stones with this. My only regret is not making this purchase earlier.

Have a number of old stones inherited over the years and all badly hollowed out. Bought this and a cheaper Japanese stone set kit that has a flattener stone included. Both appear to be the same stone. Will use them and my 400-grit diamond stone for comparison. Have tried sandpaper on a marble floor tile to stay flat and it worked but took forever. Hope these are faster.

Got this as a gift for my partner, shipping was great but it’s missing one of the finer stones. Very disappointed with a packaging being wrecked.

Actually use the laying Stone more than the whetstone. It's mostly because we have more than one of these and they seem to work efficiently. I wish I had the diamond version of the sharpener though. These Stones aren't so much for sharpening as they are for building a foundation before you sharpen. I think they're worth the money but I can't remember what I paid for them. It's lasting me more than 4 years and the durability seems to hold up. All these stones have a learning curve but once you learn it it's not that bad.

It comes in a nice cardboard box tightly packed in a cutout foam. There was no instructions on how to use this stone included, though. After inspection the stone looked flat with my square though it did have a small chip off the edge. One of the long edges had a slight raised edge, sort of like a burr. This stone initially felt very gritty and abrasive. After soaking the stone in water for 30 minutes as suggested in a previous review and using it on my Norton stone for a few minutes it felt like it was working. Then after a couple of more minutes the sound and effort changed and you could tell it wasn’t working properly, even with constant rewetting. I looked at the stone and you could see and feel it was glazed up and it didn’t feel abrasive at all any more. I tried to clean the stone with an abrasive cleaner with no improvement so I used a diamond plate to clean it off. The next day after letting the stone dry off I used mineral oil and it seemed to work better but after 45 minutes my Norton stone was still cupped and it wasn’t that bad to start with. I even flipped it over and used the flat side and it worked for a few minutes and it glazed up, too. End result after over 2 hours of effort was a stone that was still cupped, though better than it was. I’m going to buy a new Norton stone next time. It’s not worth the time and effort and still not have a completely flat sharpening stone. Oh yeah, after cleaning the glazing off the flattening stone it barely feels abrasive any more. I would send it back for a refund but I’ve used it already. Don’t waste your time and money on this one, it’s not worth it.

I use this to flatten my Lansky Pucks. It is a good beginner/intermediate stone for an almost perfect flatness on your sharpening stones. It's not a professional stone to be sure - but then it doesn't cost as much as those do. I have no problem using it, and it produced great results. The one I was sent had no pockets or broken edges in it, and was very flat - a great purchase.
