It creates a vacuum with the pump, meaning no using your mouth to get the water started ...then you work the cleaner around on your rocks to get all the poop out.

Honestly, the best I can say is that these work. The gravel vacuum did not work well for me at all, but that might well be more because I have a bare bottom than anything else. Likewise, the sand rake really doesn’t do much for me, but because I don’t have any sand. The narrow vacuum head for the pole on the other hand, does work well overall. The hosing I found a bit short. I can’t just plop the end in with a siphon going, and work on vacuuming the bottom. I have to actually hold up the bucket to collect the water with one hand and hold the end of the hose at the same time. If my aquarium was on the ground, this wouldn’t be an issue, but it’s only on an average stand so it still shouldn’t be one. Another 6-10 inches would probably be fine.As far as everything else, the sponges, net, scraper, etc. all work alright. They’re not the best quality, but they’ll work just fineI will also note, that there were no instructions. Mostly, these things are self-explanatory, and it’s not too hard to figure out how to connect everything, but I do wish that there were instructions. The knob you turn to lock in some of the heads for instance, was very tight. I thought I might break it if I kept trying to turn it, but I couldn’t see another way it would work. Turns out I was right, and that’s how you connect everything, but I could have broken it if I was wrong. Basic instructions would have helped.Overall, if you’re looking for an aquarium cleaning set as a beginner, or just looking for some basics without spending a ton, I think this set will work for you.
