The Professional Bansuri has a mouthpiece that is played in a similar way as the western transverse flute. It is made from a single piece of bamboo with seven holes. The pitch indicated for the bansuri means the flute will play that pitch with the first 3 holes covered. The dominate hand plays the lower three holes. The seventh hole is optional and rarely played. Its main purpose is to give greater accuracy in the upper octaves. It may be played on the rare occasion when you need to play the Ni in the lower octave. The bansuri is a transverse flute from India, literally from the words bans (bamboo) and suri. It is one of the oldest musical instruments. All half notes, accidentals and microtones are produced by a unique fingering system. The finger holes have to be precisely covered either fully or half by the phalanxes of the fingers and not by the fingertips. This technique also simplifies the playing of longer bansuris. The standard quality of the Indian bansuris produce a quite beautiful sound, but their tuning is often not exactly to the western standard notes. It can happen that they sometimes sound slightly out of tune to the western ear. The professional Bansuri flutes are made from only one type of bamboo, called cinchor. This bamboo only grows in the interior forests of Assam. Only straight Bamboo of 3 to 4 years old and of the proper diameter can be used. The cut bamboo is then treated, dried and stored for years until it is properly seasoned. The longer it is seasoned the better the flute. The correct notes are achieved by piercing the seasoned bamboo with hot iron rods in precise positions along the length.

Nice flute, inexpensive and well packaged. When I can get the holes covered, the notes seem in tune with each other. I am an average sized female and my fingers have a hard time covering the holes even with piper’s grip. This flute would probably be fine if you have larger fingers. It produced a nice sound and had no cracks. It does have a strong smell like lacquer. The smell is not as strong after airing out for a month, but I can still smell an unpleasant chemical odor while playing when I breathe in.

I've ordered two of these flutes because I like to have flutes around in different spots for quick practice sessions and the low price of these (with free Prime shipping to the US from India, no less) was hard to resist. Both flutes, surprisingly, sound very good and are highly playable. Cosmetically, there is a bit to be desired as both have a spotty finish. But the bamboo is straight and of a good thickness to produce a sweet tone. The one issue is that both flutes, advertised as being in the key of G (for Sa) are actually in the key of F# (and slightly flat of that). However, they are in good tune with themselves and so serve well as inexpensive practice flutes or as that second (third, fourth...) flute to keep in a corner of your home for a quick riff when the mood strikes you.

I have been playing Bansuri for 20 years and over the years have found it frustrating to buy bansuri flutes online. They are difficult to make in a well-tuned manner and it depends greatly on the skill of the flute-maker since each one is hand made. It is tough to find a well-tuned flute even in a flute shop in India unless you approach a reputed flutemaker directly and so the chances of finding a well-tuned flute as a result of an online purchase are often slim. I was pleasantly surprised to find both the G flute as well as the F flute I ordered from "Music Factory Direct" to be of great quality and well tuned. To add, the customer service was fantastic. I have purchased bansuris from other sellers on Amazon and my experience with "Music Factory Direct" was far superior to those of others. I highly recommend these bansuris and "Music Factory Direct" in particular.
