I have several different models of Baofeng's. Overall I am impressed with the value they offer at their price point. Are there better radios out there? Yes. Are they exponentially more costly? Yes. Do you get exponentially better radio experience with that cost? For me, the answer is no.Having said that, this is the best feeling Baofeng I have. The first "quality" enhancement I noticed with this radio versus others I own is ruggedness. There are subtle changes that I noticed, like the battery is secured with a screwed onto the radio instead of utilizing spring loaded latches. I feel like if the radio gets dropped, my radio battery will not shoot across the floor. There is also no belt clip, or attachment point to add one. Instead, you must use some sort of holster or pouch for this radio (one included), so there is not clip to break off. Because there is not a clip attached to the back, the speaker has been relocated from the usual front position to the back of the radio, and conversely the charging contacts are swapped to the front instead of their regular rear position. Although the screen display is decent, I feel like Baofeng missed an opportunity to upgrade the size of the screen. I would have liked a larger screen, and there is some real estate to accommodate one. The screen seems to be the same one utilized on many of my other Baofeng's. The difference is that on some of my radios the screen is oriented in a portrait position and others turned in a landscape format.As far a performance, the battery life is good, and as always I am a fan of the USB-C charging, although there is also an included charging base. The VFO mode is easy to switch back and forth, and programming is easy using CHIRP. I believe you need to select the UV-17Pro. The GPS function provides basic location info, and GPS reception is pretty solid. Transmission is good with the provided antenna on 70cm/2m. I am fortunate to have many solid repeaters in my area, so I haven't stretched out the legs of this 10w radio. I still need to test out the 1.25m band. In my experience, the included antenna usually is not tuned well for 220. Overall I like this radio. It is heavier than most of my other radios, but to me that extra weight adds to its rugged feel. I like the security of a pouch or holster compared to a flimsy clip and with the GPS data, this is probably going to be my go to radio when heading to the woods. I keep eyeballing "better" more expensive radios, but for what I use them for and how I used them, this price point offers a lot without having to worry too much about losing or damaging it when outdoors.

I own a number of Baofeng radios, but this one is different. It's like Baofeng decided to finally make a radio that looks and feels like a professional class workhorse instead of a cheap toy. I was intrigued when I went to install the battery but couldn't figure out how to get it to snap on correctly. That's because it doesn't snap on; it attaches with a screw. Two antennas are included, a longer, thinner one and a shorter, thicker one like you'd find on a "real" radio. There are two knobs on the top, one for power on and volume, and one to change the channel. There are still buttons on the front of the radio allow channel changes too.Unlike other Baofeng models, this one does not include the useless "flashlight" feature. Nor does it include a belt clip. Instead, it comes with a belt pouch. It also came with a wrist strap, but I can't find a place on the radio where the strap can attach, and there's nothing in the instructions about it. The battery has more capacity than older models and adds some height to the radio when it's installed.Since this seems to be a newer model, I was concerned that the Chirp radio programming software might not support it yet. While the model "UV-32" isn't yet found in Chirp, I read that the driver for the Baofeng UV-17ProGPS works with this radio. I was easily able to load frequencies this way. Hopefully this specific model will be added to Chirp down the road.When testing handheld radios, I have a standard route that I travel while talking with a family member back at home. With most FRS radios, I lose contact about halfway through the route. With this radio, I was able to be heard almost the whole way around the route. Considering the hilly terrain, buildings, and distance involved, it's rare that a handheld radio will communicate the whole way, but this one did using high power and the included shorter antenna. One important note is that the squelch on this radio is set too high by default. It should be set to 1 but it defaults to 3, which almost makes this receiver seem "deaf". Changing the squelch setting is easy using the menu options.I wish I had the equipment to test spurious emissions and measure power output; unfortunately I don't so I don't know whether the UV-32 scores better than its predecessors in those areas. I can say for sure though that Baofeng is moving in the right direction with this radio. The cheap "Chinese toy" look and feel of many prior models is gone.
