Buckle plays Aspis shield or Hoplon shield. The Hoplon, better known as the Spartan shield, is a round convex shield of ancient Greek hoplites. It is with this shield that the phrase "Come back with your shield - or on it" is associated. Escaping the battlefield, and thus the loss of the shield was considered the worst crime in ancient Greece and severely punished. Therefore, the warrior had to return either with the shield (the victory) or on the shield (that is, to die in battle).
