Whereas the typical silver brazing white flux (see Silver Brazing White Flux Paste) is active to 870°C/1600°F, No. 601B/3411 black brazing flux paste is active to 980°C/1800°F.

I have been using this flux for at least 15 years and it is absolutely fabulous for difficult silver soldering jobs in which it takes a while to get everything up to temperature. I have been silver soldering for 50 years, on gold and silver jewelry and also on steel and stainless steel industrial items. Since I started out using white flux I used it for everything for many years and when I became aware of the black flux I decided to give it a try because it promised to hold up better during extended heating. It does and formerly iffy jobs using white flux are a breeze with the black flux. My understanding is that it is more toxic to breath than the white flux so good ventilation is necessary but my success rate has certainly gone up since I started using it. Harris does a really nice job with both their fluxes and their silver solders.

Jar came in mail with crystalizations all over the exterior. Jar was taped shut for shipping but still leaked everywhere. I put it in my car, and next I checked, flux everywhere. Oily material leaking from container. Got everywhere. Not sure if it's toxic or not, doesn't tast very good.
