Product Description

Our heavy duty 1020 humidity domes are built to last you many years. Understanding that farms are not a place for fragile objects, we decided to produce these seed tray lids for our own farm. The thickness and quality is based off our dissatisfaction with the flimsy and brittle quality of the other domes available online and in the big box store. These propagation domes will out last anything else many times over keeping both your pockets and the earth green.

Bootstrapping the Food Revolution

The process of rebuilding our food system is underway.

Indoor farm technologies, zero waste food establishments, shared spaces, subscriptions and even food trucks have opened a universe of opportunities to be part of the sustainable food movement.

Bootstrap Farmer wants to do our part. By reusing equipment year after year, we all reduce waste.

Creating an impactful change feels like a big task, but thousands of us are out there doing it anyway- learning on the fly.

Networks of farmers & producers building hubs providing for the local food economy. Restaurants exchanging Bootstrap containers with their farmers. Farmers taking a larger share of the supply chain through their farm grown meal plans. Turning herbs into a craft cocktail out of a food truck. The possibilities are endless.

Bootstrap Farmer is trying out these things through Veg2Bowl and the Craven Local Food Market in Ernul, NC, relating the lessons learned through the Urban Farm Academy.

These humidity domes are molded of very heavy weight translucent plastic with two adjustable vents. Unfortunately the centers of the long edges bow out by nearly half an inch so there is a gap between the edge of the dome and the Bootstrap Farmer 1020 heavy duty trays. Thus condensation runs down the inside of the dome and onto the floor rather than returning to the tray.

Very sturdy tops. Doubt I will have to ever replace these which makes them a great deal.

If you want a cover for your 1020 bottom tray this is the way to go. Most other seed trays/covers/seed starting trays are made to only last a year or maybe two if you are lucky because they are cheaply made with very thin and brittle materials. Not this cover. I can tell it will last a lifetime as long as something heavy isn’t dropped on it.

These are made out of thick polypropylene (PP) in the USA (it is stamped on the bottom edge). They don't fit my Neversink Tools bottom trays perfectly, instead balancing on the top edges of the bottom trays. But they cannot slide off because the inner (Winstrip) trays are taller than the bottom trays that hold them. They certainly fit better than the flimsy plastic Jiffy tray lids I have been using! The Bootstrap Farmer humidity domes are translucent, not clear, which diffuses but undoubtedly reduces the amount of light reaching the seedlings. That is a potential downside, but fortunately I have some very bright lights https://www.amazon.com/VIPARSPECTRA-KS5000-Coverage-Spectrum-Commercial/dp/B09MTSY9G2?th=1 (which I highly recommend) that are easily up to the task. But if your light source is marginally bright enough, I would recommend buying clear humidity domes instead; or better yet, getting brighter lights (that is the best option.) I could have bought the Neversink Tools humidity domes (which fit their trays perfectly and are clear), but they don't have adjustable vents to regulate the humidity, and are slightly more expensive. Perhaps a toss up, but I wanted to try these to have the ability to reduce the humidity gradually (by adjusting the preinstalled vents) without resorting to some sort of wonky homemade lid spacers. If you aren't using inner trays (in the Neversink bottom trays), the Bootstrap Farmer domes would not work well with the Neversink bottom trays due to the risk of sliding off and damaging seedlings. All that considered, I recommend these trays for those with a bright light source seeking a truly durable humidity dome that has adjustable vents.

I used this as intended, to cover up seed starting flats, the size of 1/2 gross, or 72 cells. I had put plastic film over them to keep the humidity in, and found that some seeds had sprouted and come to a bad end. This plastic dome fit on the flats amazingly and saved the rest of the plants. Makes a tiny greenhouse, you can just pick it up. I put it outside in a sheltered place and the little plants seem happy. You can take it off if the weather is mild, and let them get some filtered sun. There's little ventilation adjusters on the top of the dome. A nice product, I'll be using them from now on, I guess.

These clear top fit standard-sized 1020 nursery trays, but they are much sturdier, thicker, stiffer and longer lasting that any others we have seen or used. I was skeptical at first due to the cost of these lids, but they seem to be a bargain as they last much longer than the typical cheesy thin and rapid-cracking lids I usually find.I will buy these again

I'd heard that these domes were sturdy and thick, but I truly had no idea what that would look like. I've had dozens of the cheap domes over the years, and they work, but they flex out of shape and quickly break down. By way of contrast, though I haven't had these domes for long, I can tell that they will last a very long time. I would guess they're 2x-3x thicker than the standard cheapo domes and will support a tray of seedlings ON TOP of the dome (if you set them to rest on top for a minute). Never had a dome I could say that about before

I use the humidity domes more for seed germination. Instead of buying a Burpee self watering 72 cell every spring for $25. I took a couple seasons to build a heavier duty system. 1.) The humidity dome: the material is good grade. It does seem to be manipulatable, but returned to shape after laying flat. The frosted/opaque look is a nice touch. The two top channels are that. You could set light strips on top. 2.) Heavy duty air prune flat: Probably around the same price as the hood. This is the part where Burpee systems usually only last a season. I found some with the open bottom(s) to wick water up a capillary mat. 3.) Bootstrap heavy duty tray: I haven't had an issue using them as water resevoirs with heat pads. I usually don't start over 2 flats at a time. Got the two pack to rotate different uses.
