The product is nicely finished and smooth with a surface treatment. The idea is to prevent copper fouling if you are using a copper removing bore cleaner. Typically these cleaners leave a blue residue when used with brass that can be clearly seen on the patch. You also see this blue residue if you have a leather sling with brass fixings, or a knife with brass trim in a leather sheaf. The leather reacts with the copper in the brass to create the blue residue.According to their website, "All Proof-Positive Pistol Patch Jags feature a proprietary alloy and secondary treatment process, making them 100% brass free and 100% barrel safe. This alloy is as soft as brass but boasts an exceptional tensile strength to prevent bending and snapping under the force of a tight patch."So the picture of this product appears to show a brass colored jag, when in fact it is an alloy with a coating....more of a silver color. If you want brass, order their v-stix patch jag. I like this pistol jag because the large end is short and I am figuring it won't bind as much in the barrel with a 2 inch patch. I carry a very small pistol cleaning kit and gun oil in my EDC bag so I can clean my pistol as soon as I can after I shoot and don't want it binding in the field.
