I haven't had any emergency situation but have used them in cold sleeping compartment of a train and must say they do keep the heat within. Obviously once it is out of its bag, its pretty impossible to fit into its bag, but very portable and I have one in the car, in the bag and always in the suitcase. Who knows when you might need it.
