The unit works. Well, it does when I set it to use IP printing. Wouldn't when I set it to use Windows printing ...I've set up several brands of network routers, so I'm no novice when it comes to network hardware. But setting up this unit took a lot of time, figuring out what to set. The documentation is useless unless you use Windows, and wouldn't be very helpful at all if you did.My advice, even if you use Windows: forget the installation software. Just hook the unit up, point your web browser at it, and try settings until it works!

I suppose some of the 5 star reviews are from folks who have never had any other print server for comparison. I find the Buffalo USB 2.0 Print Server to be one of the worst I've worked with. First, it is incompatible with many printers -- you need a Postscript printer, or forget using this Server. Second, it doesn't seem to pass through reset commands: if the printer faults, you need to plug the printer's USB cord directly into your PC to get it unfaulted, and then reconnect to the Buffalo print server. I've never had this problem with any other print server. Third, the CD install and the manual are miles apart. What the CD asks for and what the manual says is the next step are so different as to make the manual almost useless. Fourth, the CD configurator doesn't work. I had to go to the web-based configuration to get the print server configured. Fifth, the Buffalo website is less than helpful. They even have a .pdf file you can download to get the user manual. I downloaded it, in hopes it would be an update of the useless one that shipped with the server. Nope! It isn't even the manual for the print server. Someone has put the wrong manual in the print server download. In short, buy a different brand if you want good software, easy installation, and a print server that will work with all your printers.

I have used a variety of Print servers for my own personal use. Most it seems require you to install a variety of different software configuration utilities in order to work. Many of these utilities make it "easier" to install a Print server and set it up. However, these utilities are often only made for Windows and due to this they do not install as easily on other Operating systems. Thus, when I received this unit I expected a quick and easy set-up in Windows and a long 3-4 hour marathon to configure it within Mac OS X. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this was not the case.I configured the unit on a Windows system to start. The enclosed CD contains a Windows only utility that simply runs off the CD for initial configuration of the Print Server. Once the Print server was configured following the instructions in the manual were spot on in regards to Windows printer installation.Next, I moved to what I expected to be a more difficult installation: Mac OS X. I attempted to follow the instructions given in the manual and found them to be out of date and thus they did not work properly. I then attempted to manually add the Printer connected to the Print server using Bonjour/Appletalk, this failed. I then proceeded to adding a new printer manually, selected IP Printer, typed in the Print Server's IP address (192.168.0.5 this will likely differ in your own configuration) and queue (P1) and selected the appropriate Printer driver from the drop down list box in the set-up window. I then attempted to print a test page and received pages of text indicating some sort of network error. Hoping all would be rectified by a reboot I rebooted the system and attempted to print again, this time the printer was configured properly and printed without fuss. I then proceeded to set-up the printer on another Mac system and after a reboot this computer could print easily as well. All in all installation on the first Macintosh PC took around 20 minutes, subsequent systems only took a few seconds (minus reboot times). In the end the Print server works quite well. I greatly respect a company for not requiring me to install their own resource using utilities to install a Print server and I also respect their use of browser-based configuration of the Print server in case a Windows system is not around or the installation CD is lost. All in all the Print server exceeded my expectations.Note: Many reviews indicate having to reconfigure the Print server using its installation CD when the router/Print server loses power. To fix this, simply have your router reserve an IP address for the Print server. This is easily done in almost all routers configuration menus.

I bought this print server because others said it works with OS X. It works great with OS X and Windows XP. I have two laptops with Windows XP and an iMac printing to a Canon Pixma MP500 printer. I would have given 5 stars but the installation directions are poor. The installation CD couldn't find the printer server on the network, so I opened up Internet Explorer and typed in the IP address of the print server. This allows you to configure the printer server without the installation CD. (username "root" and no password, the login information doesn't appear in the documented anywhere) I configured the print server to have a static IP address. On Windows XP I created a local printer that prints to the IP address. The more complex part of getting the print server working was with OS X. By default, OS X doesn't include a network print driver for the Canon Pixma series printer. I downloaded a network print driver from PrintFab.com and it works great.
