The USB ports on this device appear to be for charging only, Not USB 3.0 Data transfer

Amazing transfer speeds if you have a USB 3.0 port in your computer and a Solid State drive. The charging ports are just charging ports, no data. For some reason I though it would have functioned like a USB hub.

Have only used it for storing items I don't need access to except on rare occasions. Otherwise, don't use is much, because it isn't really to portable.

Perfect for my needs. I have a few SSDs and this makes it very easy to use them. No screws or any difficulties to handle. The drives are well protected (I got additional protective cases) and easy to swap. I used this to clone a previous (smaller) SSD I had installed on an iMac which I upgraded to a 1TB SSD by Samsung. All went flawlessly and smoothly. Highly recommended!

I purchased this unit as I wanted an external drive bay for a 2.5" drive I took out of a laptop and also needed some charging ports for my various devices. It was a real snap to put the drive in the case and I really like that you can purchase additional cases for more drives if you want to. The high-amperage charging port charges my iPad in no time and the device works great with my MacBook Pro. I strongly recommend this product. Just be mindful that they are CHARGING ports - not USB hub ports. CableMatters makes another version of this device that is actually a hub. I specifically wanted charging ports, so this was perfect for me.

[IMPORTANT * This is a review of the 2.5 SATA HD Docking Station with USB Hub, not the Charging Hub as is noted above; Amazon will not let me update that info for whatever reason]I had been looking for a smaller docking solution in order to start using bare 2.5 drives for backup, and stumbled across this offering from Cable Matters. The price is quite reasonable and USB3 is plenty fast enough for my needs (typically, cloning a MacBook Pro's internal storage (not really a HD anymore) using Carbon Copy Cloner to rotate backups off-site for safety). I also got the little 2.5 Case Packs, which makes them like little Game Cartridges, about the size of old Atari 2600 carts -- neat!Given the choice between the Charging Hub and the regular Hub, the regular seemed most logical -- I get the dock on my desktop for easy swap-out, and a three-port, A/C-powered USB 3 hub for syncing my iPhone, iPad, and hooking up other externals, such as bus-powered CD drives, thumb drives, etc.Only there's a problem -- this dock, while it works great with the bare drives and will charge an iPhone, will *not* charge an iPad, nor drive a bus-powered CD/DVD/BD USB drive. (Sync still works fine for an iPad/iPad mini, you'll just get the alert that there's not enough power to charge it.)Perplexing -- I figured with A/C power, this would not be an issue -- but my own fault for not checking in advance. So you have a choice; either a 3-port hub for charging *or* a 3-port hub for syncing and iPhone (and similar, though I'm not sure about higher-draw smartphones) charging. What would have been far better, IMO, is for CM to have hedged their bets and done one with two ports as a sync hub and one port as a charge-only, but not being an electrical engineer, it's easy for me to second-guess that.Beyond this drawback, it's a nice, solid system, and a good alternative to dedicated-case external drive use.Note: I did contact CM about this, and they responded (quickly, I should add) that "As all the other USB hubs, this dock station with USB hub is not designed for charging iPad since iPad needs more power", which I think is misleading, as I often hook up USB-powered CD/DVD/BD drives and iPads to connected USB3 hubs without a power issue, so I guess they simply mean their hubs. They did suggest an alternate, their "7-Port SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Hub with 3 USB Charging Ports" which, sure, is nice, but it doesn't have the dock, which was my only reason for considering this offering.
