BACKGROUND:I have a Jeep Wrangler (JL) and the interior lighting leaves quite a bit to be desired, especially in the floorboard area of the vehicle. When this came up as a Vine suggestion, I figured it was a reasonable price ($4.29 for 10 even before the Vine discount) and might be worth reviewing.INITIAL OBSERVATIONS:These bulbs do not come with a holder since they are designed to be put in existing sockets in the vehicle. Since I was not using it in that manner, I then needed to order some of the bulb sockets. The sockets from one Amazon vender would not work with these bulbs nor another T5 LED bulb that I agreed to do a Vine review on. The sockets from a different Amazon vendor did work though. So, depending upon your existing sockets, the T5 LED bulbs may or may not be an acceptable replacement.IMPRESSIONS:If you are expecting a super bright bulb, go elsewhere -- that is not what these are designed for since that would blind you at night anyway. They are bright enough on the floorboard to find something (e.g. fry/chip, pen, etc) that you might have dropped, but not so bright that you can't still see the road while driving if they are on. They are definitely bright enough for their *intended* use (lighting instrument clusters).One of the problems with LEDs is that they are polarity dependent. Whereas with incandescent bulbs, you could swap the positive and negative leads on a bulb and it would still work the same, with LEDs, you can actually *damage* the LEDs if you do that. Since there really is no easy way to determine from looking at the bulb or the socket (because they are too small) which conductor is positive and which is negative, you have a 50/50 chance of getting it wrong and burning up the bulb. Luckily, many of the bulb manufacturers realize this and take steps in their design to either be able to operate with reverse polarity or not allow the LEDs to be be damaged in such a situation (the LEDs don't produce light when hooked up backwards, but they more importantly do not allow themselves to get damaged). Hooking up an LED (light emitting diode) backwards if it is not in an assembly to protect it will quickly result in it becoming a DED (dark emitting diode). :) These bulbs will not operate in reverse polarity, but they do not allow themselves to be damaged if you plug them in backwards, so that is perfectly acceptable as far as I'm concerned.CONCLUSION:Considering the expected lifespan of these lights (50K hrs), it is unlikely that I'll ever have to replace them, so I'll probably just solder small wires onto the back of the bulb instead of relying on the sockets to actually fit the bulbs. It's a basic small LED bulb that works exactly like it is supposed to do and as such, it is a solid 3-star (i.e. "average") rating. Since it does not allow itself to be damaged when hooked up with reverse polarity, I would raise that rating to a 3.5-star (i.e. "slightly above average") rating.STAR RATING SCALE:1 -- Poor product; Waste of money at ANY price; Blatant lies in the original listing.2 -- Below average product; Something about it is a bit lacking; It could be conflicted specifications or errors in the original listing or that it was arrived with damage that was unlikely to have occurred during shipping and should have been caught in either the manufacturer's or seller's quality control.3 -- Average product; Meets expectations, perfectly serviceable, but does not do anything that sets it apart from similar products; Does not have some features that makes me say, "Wow, that's a neat feature".4 -- Above average product; Something about it sets it a bit above similar products on the market.5 -- Excellent product (or perhaps customer service); There is NO room for improvement whatsoever; NOTHING is perfect, so this rating *should* be EXTREMELY difficult to achieve.Ordered:2024-01-22Received:2024-01-25Reviewed:2024-02-03
