This is definitely a factory second. It has some issues going on but they are mild. This is not the best factory second that I have received from cold steel but far from the worst and it's mostly cosmetic. The throat of the scabbard is misaligned and too large which is probably do to the leather inside being done wrong. No big deal for me. It still fits snug. There is spot where the leather wasn't fully dyed. Also not too worried about that. There are some rough bits on the grip leather. It's not the best done. However for sub $200 this isn't something I would expect to out of the park. Finally it did arrive well coated in oil but despite that there are some small bits of rust here and there.I don't feel like the function has been effected. It's just cosmetic, keeping that in mind I'm okay given I caught it on sale and at almost half off it's normal price I think it's a great buy.

Sword came good and sharp. The scabbard has two little interior leather flaps to secure the blade. The problem is, the sword being so sharp (which is great) cut one right off. Poor design. Just make some leather humps to create enough friction on the blade to secure it. Now the scabbard fit is super loose. Within a few hours of ownership.

It's not the model from Cold Steel, but instead a poor reproduction with a weak construction. The pommel is glued, te nut on the pommel is only screwed in the pommel and not on the tang, making it useless to the solidity of the sword. The steel is soft and would not endure cutting tests. It is sold as a cutting sword but it is not.

I mainly got this sword as my first because let's face it everyone wants a sword.... it does come sharpened which is nice and it's great length and weight. The downside is it's a little flimsy but it would still cleave through most fleshy things with ease I believe.

The sword itself is great. The scabbard itself was dirty.

I'll admit that this sword will cut... But only because it's really sharp and wafer thin. I have enclosed photos that clearly show that this "sword" can cut only because it is under-built. The blade has zero distal taper. It is as thin at the guard as it is two inches from the point, about 2-3mm the entire length of the blade. As it comes out of the box, it will cut (once you have cleaned all the gunk off, but all swords come that way) because they have put a very good edge on it and the thin, wispy, whippy blade has very little drag. All you have to do is pray that your edge is perfectly aligned and swing. I got a few good cuts, but the tatami mat was very unevenly sliced. If your alignment is off at all, you will see the sword sunk unevenly into the mat. It is poorly designed and almost comically assembled. There is a 30 inch blade atop an 11 inch handle and pommel. The nut pommel (as you can see) is held in place by a cheap, ugly slot-head screw (Classy, right?) and the grip is a rather poorly sewn piece if so-so leather. All in all, This sword is nowhere near worth the price. There are many other swords available for a third less money that are designed much better and are solidly built. In truth, if I were an official at any cutting competition, I would urge that the sword NOT be deemed suitable and not allow it in the competition! I honestly believe that a single mistake that caused this sword to strike a solid wood tatami mat stand could cause a catastrophic failure of the sword. All in all, way below anything I would expect from Cold Steel!
