About this item

  • Rectangular shape for smoothing and shaping straight surfaces, with tapered width to ease access in slots
  • American pattern file for non-precision material removal
  • Double-cut teeth on both sides for rapid removal of material
  • Single-cut teeth on both edges for finishing, sharpening, and deburring
  • Tang for use with an optional handle (sold separately)

The Nicholson flat hand file has a rectangular shape with double-cut American pattern teeth on both sides for smoothing and shaping straight surfaces. The file tapers slightly toward the point in width to ease access into slots. It has double-cut American pattern teeth on each side for rapid material removal and single-cut teeth on the edges for finishing, sharpening, and deburring. The tang can be used with an optional handle for secure gripping (sold separately).

Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth have single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother, more precise finish than equivalent American pattern files.

Nicholson manufactures hand tools and power tool accessories. The company is headquartered in Sparks, MD.

I've been reprofiling axe heads lately. I must already own a dozen files all different shapes and sizes. Most of them are decades old. I decided to Shell out some money for a new one. From the very first stroke I could see shower of metal filings sprinkling off my workbench as the file dug in. 40 bucks? Worth every penny

This file is awesome. It's huge, and it removes metal fast. Exactly as described: 16" Double-Cut Bastard File, with Course Teeth. I got this file for rapid metal removal. Before I was using a "fine" pattered single-cut 12" Nicholson file, and in comparison to that file, this one works about 2 or 3 times faster. That's not really too scientific, but what I'm trying to say is that this file does remove metal fast, so if you've got a lot of steel to file, I'd start with this big guy.**Side Note: Golf balls make the best file handles**

Excellent for the price! Theses are Mexican made and are not as hard and nice as USA's used to be. I don't think that it will last a lifetime like the older USA made.

I have mixed feelings. The file is made in MexicoThe description says "BOXED". I assumed that meant it came in a box and would be protected from the factory. I ordered several other tools and this humongous file was just laying loose in the box ontop of all the other tools with no box or padding around it what so ever. I lucked out literally. All the other tools were padded or in their factory packaging and so they were spared from damage and the file has no damage. I looked at the teeth with magnification; they are all perfect/ factory fresh. So far so good.I will use the file and report back on hardness. If the file had been in a factory cardboard box and made in the USA as some of the photos on amazon seem to show then I would have given a five star rating right off. Time will tell.A small matter to me but some will care : the file I received is NOT double cut but is a single cut with chip breaker lines in it. It is good and coarse and will leave a little better finish and I can draw file with it so is closer to what I wanted than a double cut anyway. In these days of clueless tool venders it is a miracle they sent a metal cutting file of any description and not a file folder storage drawer made from metal. Call me a cynic but some of you know EXACTLY what I mean. For those who have been "enjoying" the lunacy of the Nicholson wooden handle size descriptions the "Nicholson Metal Ferruled Wooden File Handle, Size 00, 5-3/4" Length" seems to be large enough to accommodate the tang. I have made my own wire wrapped and soldered wood handles in the past when I couldn't find one so I have a pretty good idea what the handle should be like for this large of a file. This is my fourth 16 inch flat file.Be sure to orient the grain of the wood so the wedge shape of the file tang doesn't try to split the grain apart. So far all I can say is this is a huge file, it is made in a questionable place of some sort of metal, subjected to some sort of heat treat, how deep that heat treat goes and what the final hardness is after annealing is anyone's guess, it is rough all over, it will shape other things more or less to your liking depending on your skill at using it, it's longevity is highly suspect, it has a good pedigree though it's parents may have been fooling around.UPDATE: I just held this Mexican file side by side with a same size Nicholson USA made file that is about twelve years old at least that I bought brand new. The difference in teeth is very noticeable, maybe they intended my new file to be a double cut but the older file is very much rougher / has much much deeper lines crossing the main teeth lines.THEN . . . wait for it . . . I took the corner of the end of the new Mexican made file and attempted to scratch the older file on the smooth area just before the file teeth. It couldn't do it. I tried the same thing in reverse and the USA file dug in and scratch the Mexico made file. This doesn't mean a huge difference. Perhaps the new file is perfectly serviceable. We did find out the new file is not the harder of the two. For another example I tried this with two pocket knives by the same manufacturer the other day and neither knife could scratch the other AT ALL.sigh . . .
