Item arrived scratched, I mean not a few knicks and chips, it looks like it was dragged across a pile of broken metal. I had to repaint it before installation. However it bolted up fine. It will do its job. But packaging leaves a lot to be desired.

Product was simple to install, has a decent tongue rating. While I didn't use it for towing we used it for a curt cargo carrier that has a raised design. The combination worked perfectly. It fits snug to the body of the prius, is incredibly stable, and supported around 150lbs of luggage with zero issue.I used a tiny bit of blue loctite on the 4 bolts prior to torquing everything down per instructions. I suggest once you attach the trailer, bike or cargo carrier to jump on the assembly some, then retorque everything. These are incredibly sturdy once secured and curts 1 1/4" riser style cargo carrier fits the prius like it was designed for it.

Solid hitch with a very DIYable install. Couple installation tips (also watch the videos on YouTube)1/ The hitch was delivered unboxed, and had been dented and scratched en route. This seems a pretty common complaint in the reviews here. If necessary you can widen the flanges to the correct width (39 5/8") using the scissor lift from the Prius trunk together with a piece of 2x4.2/ Installation requires you to remove a plastic cover on the underside of the car. There are several different kinds of fasteners used on this piece, including plastic clips and a 10mm bolt. Watch the Curt installation video to see their location. I backed the car up onto two pieces of 8x2 stacked on each other to get more ground clearance, as it's tricky to reach the bolt (you will need a 6" socket extension)3/ If the bolts holding the tow hooks are rusty, it's useful to have a small wire brush and PB Blaster (or similar) to hand. I had to leave one bolt to soak overnight before I could loosen it up.4/ The plastic cover needs to be trimmed prior to reinstallation. This is easily done with a box cutter and sharp blade. You don't need a rotary tool or anything else too fancy. After mounting up my bike rack, it seems the receiver is slightly out of square (about 3/4" over 36"). Not a big deal and doesn't affect my use case. Overall it's a decent product for the price.

A few of the reviews I read before buying one of these made me a bit leery, but I decided to give it a try. This is for my daughters' 2005 Prius. She will using it to attach a storage 'basket' to haul a mower around our neighborhood for her more-distant customers. It arrived quickly and with a little box damage but nothing that affected the hitch. As expected, we had to remove a plastic panel from the car and then two metal 'ears' that were in the locations that the hitch needed to bolt to. A little Liquid Wrench made the bolts in the car easy to remove.***HINT FOR CURT*** mark the receiver area with some bright yellow tape or something. I didn't notice that there was great new hardware in a bag that was tucked into the opening until later...Installing it was super easy. I just started one bolt, got it 80% in and then did the same to a diagonal position on the other side. That held it up well and let me wiggle things as needed and get the other two in and fully done. No bending, moving or even making up new words. It was a simple hour-long installation start to finish for us. So, if you're hesitating based on the negatives, we had no problems at all.

WARNING: One of the most frequent complaints about this product is that the screw holes don't line up and this was the case with the hitch I received. My car is a 2008 Prius and this hitch is supposed to fit. The CURT shipping box it arrived in was trashed and though there didn't seem to be damage the holes were at least 1/2" off center. I can only conclude that either a) CURT doesn't know how to manufacture hitches that actually fit the 2008 Prius or b) Toyota doesn't know how to reliably make 2008 Priuses with the correct hole spacing every time or c) CURT doesn't know how to pack their hitches to prevent shipping damage or d) based on the number of complaints about mis-fitting CURT hitches UPS has something against CURT and keeps damaging their hitch packages on purpose.Do yourself a favor - buy the hitch and installation directly from U-Haul and have them deal with it. I will say that the CURT instructions and videos for installation were perfect and if the holes had actually fit a 2008 Prius the installation would have been incredibly easy.

I wanted to put a hitch bike rack on my 2008 Prius and finding a trailer hitch for this kind of car is very difficult. This was really the only hitch made for the Prius so I didn't have much of a choice. Installing it was only supposed to take about 45 minutes and most places I called wanted between $80-$120 which is high considering there was no electrical installation required (remember, I only needed it for a bike rack) and that's what they do, so it shouldn't take them that long. Anyway, I also have put in several hitches myself and usually it doesn't take that long, but it took me 3 hours!!! The reason was because, as you'll discover in other user-reviews, this hitch is just slightly not wide enough for the Prius, so you have to be Superman and bend solid steel with your bare hands to get it to fit. I tried for hours to prop something in one side just enough to be able to get the holes lined up so that I could put the bolts in on the other side of the car. It was a major drag!!! I finally did get it and the hitch works great. I also used it for a Hitch-Haul and went to BC and it worked great for that as well. The only other thing is that it's a smaller-sized receiver than a standard hitch, so you have to be aware of that. So my bike rack and Hitch-Haul is for a smaller receiver, so if I get another car with a standard sized trailer hitch, I'll have to get a conversion piece (they'r about $35) or a new bike rack and Hitch-Haul. Once installed, the hitch has been fine, but installing it was a real drag because it's still being built under-sized for the Prius. If you can afford it, let someone else do it.
