The DB Booster is not transparent at all and colored the sound of the Royer SF12 Passive Stereo Ribbon mic I used to test and it also dramatically changed the transients which was another BIG deal breaker.The coloration of the sound is a nice sound (I would describe it as chocolatey) if you wanted added thickening & beefyness to the Lo/Lo-Mid information of your mic. But, that is not what I was looking for.With respect to the db boosts that you get, which is what it is designed for, it did a very good job & was clean, quiet gain, which does allow you to turn down the input gain on your mic preamp. A+ on this.As an instrument DI, was nothing special compared to top notch DI boxes in testing.I was looking forward to testing the DB booster since I am a big fan of Royer ribbon Mic’s. But, it is way overpriced and to deliver gain at the sacrifice of transparency & transients/dynamics (I could also see the difference in the transients in the waveforms compared to the mic without the db booster) for your microphones is unacceptable & sort of shooting yourself in the foot in an effort to improve gain staging.I also tested the DB booster with an RCA BK-5 & 3 different MXL Ribbon mics.Whatever Royer has inside of that box, it’s really messing with the neutrality of whatever you run through it. I can’t understand why they would make something like that as a top tier Ribbon mic company. Who wants to spend $275 to boost your signal & mess with your sound and dynamics?Disappointing, especially given (worth noting) the hype from the video on their website about “frequency independent boosting”, or whatever they called it? As soon as I heard it, that was the first thing I thought of…
