The build quality and performance are fine and what one would expect for this type of lamp. However, I didn't buy this lamp for its light, but because I am a collector of oil lamps and stoves. The hot-blast lamp is a dying breed, and, as far as I am aware, only Dietz now manufactures them. I have heard rumours that Dietz will soon stop manufacturing these, if they haven't already. Apart from this offering on Amazon, the only other ways of getting this type of lamp are from niche suppliers or auction sites where you can expect to pay dearly for an old corroded model, or pay silly money for a good specimen.

Considering the cost of these, and their reputation as being very well made, the one I bought was laughable. The top wire holding the globe is badly deformed, pushing the globe forward off it's vertical axis. This is clearly a manufacturing fault as, had it happened in transit from the USA to the UK, the globe would be broken or ar least cracked, as it's in direct contact with the wire.Considering I paid £42 and had to order it from the USA, it's a joke.I'm guessing as these lanterns are now made in China, the quality control has gone out the window. Also the wick holder is slightly crooked, also facing forwards. This, coupled with the badly deformed wire at the top, gives the whole lantern askewed or leaning forward effect.Really not good enough.Better off buying an original lantern made in USA and restoring it a bit.

Filled the lantern about 1/4 full since I know about not overfilling these type of lanterns. Left it sit on my workbench to allow the wick to soak, picked it up and found a puddle of kero on the bench... NOT GOOD!! It is confirmed leaking on the base seam. Others have commented that they fixed theirs, but I should not have to fix defective product!! This may be a one-off, luck of the draw. Bought 2 #80 Dietz cold blasts and they do not have this problem...**EDIT** found another potentially MUCH MORE SERIOUS PROBLEM problem with this hot blast lantern construction. The problem is that the arms are only spot welded to the base tank. So, if you tip the lantern even slightly to the side, fuel will pour out of it just as if you took the filler cap off... Vintage lamps (which I own or have access to) appear to be soldered at the base joint. This seals the arm to the base and they do not have this problem...This is a pretty bad construction/engineering oversight..Of further note is that the two cold blast Dietz #80 lamps I just got are built the same way. Arms are spot welded to the base. Since cold blast has two chambers, the above does not seem to be a problem since you have to tip pretty far to get fuel to pour out of the burner assembly. Tested this out extensively on the two I just got. They are fully operational. **END EDIT**Returned it immediately, had very good return service from Amazon. It's not their fault. Amazon rocks!

Looks nice and doesn't leak so long as you're not dumb enough to over fill it. However I actually greatly prefer the smaller $10 one I got at Walmart. This one is more for show than anything else and puts out about the same amount of light as the other one if you're using indoors. Of using outdoors, you could have the flame up much higher but that creates a real lot of smoke and soot which isn't great, especially when compared to smaller ones I have

Very poorly made. It was made so crooked that you could not even raise the globe to try and light it. SO BAD IT WAS RETURNED.

Dietz is a standard in the world of kerosene lanterns. While the light output is no where near that of an Aladdin or Coleman kerosene lantern (yes, Coleman still makes kerosene lamps) the light is good enough for many tasks. We live in the country and while we don't lose power often, when we do lose power, it's off for quite a while.
