Here are the characteristics that make a great vintage humbucker: a soft magnetic field, sweet tone, perfect balance between warmth and clarity, the ability to go from clean to distorted by pick attack alone. For our PAF 36th Anniversary Neck we wanted to continue in the path of pioneers such as Seth Lover (designer of the original Patent Applied For humbucker) and create pickups that combine all of the characteristics of great vintage humbuckers. These pickups are not merely clones. We re-engineered the PAF using our patented technology and Larry DiMarzio’s own 1959 cherry sunburst Gibson Les Paul as the reference. Larry’s Gibson Les Paul has a uniquely amazing sound and it’s not only due to the pickups — it’s the total fusion of many elements of the guitar itself. Although the pickups have a weak magnetic field, the sound is well defined: almost like a single-coil. We duplicated the weaker magnetic field in order to allow the strings to vibrate longer, as well as focus and articulate the attack and output. We use computer-controlled winders to consistently layer the 42-gauge custom-coated wire, achieving the exact frequency response we want. Then it’s dipped in our custom formula to eliminate squeal and microphonics. The cover is made from nickel-silver and our new plating makes it more magnetically transparent than the originals. The PAF 36th Anniversary Neck is smooth but not muddy. It performs equally well in the neck or bridge, just as the best humbuckers from the 50s did. We’ll build the PAF 36th Anniversary any way you want it. Choose the bobbin style — vintage glossy or modern matte, the type of base — traditional, long-legged or standard, short-legged, and the type of cable — vintage single-conductor or 4-conductor. The PAF 36th Anniversary Neck is available uncovered, and we also offer three types of covers: standard polished and plated, buffed with no plating, and our vintage worn cover that looks so authentic and broken in that you’ll swear it’s been hanging around since 1959.

I've used dimarzio for a very long time In several bands... sense I've been only jamming and my last show was in 2014 I just play as a hobby now and switched to Duncan's and now that I've tried dimarzio again after these many years I'm surprised I ever stopped.. I used to play tone zones in the bridge and an air Norton in the neck then switched to duncan jb and jazz sets .. I now have a super distortion and a paf set and I'm surprised I've never tried this pairing b4 but so far it is very cool and gets a much more aggressive sound then I'm used to and I'm liking the change ... it really is nice to have different guitars set up very different... I've been putting jb and jazz sets in everything and then wondering why all my guitars sound the same lol.... but yes I'm loving this new setup

This is by far the worst humbucker pickup I have ever tried. The high E string was completely muted, and the tone was empty. You would be better off with some GFS humbuckers of some type. Do some research.

I'd never played a guitar with true PAF's in it, so I can't say that this a good copy or not. But what I can say is, I've played Duncan's exclusively for many years and decided to give this a try and I'm glad that I did. I just love this Pickup. Plenty of power to overdrive a amp and articulate to picking your style. I've got a pair of these in a Epi Les Paul and it's sounding like a more expensive machine. Thanks Larry.

These pickups have incredible tone and are very strong. I replaced the Epiphone pickups in my ES- 335 replica. Very good choice. These DiMarzio's can turn down and clean up with great tone . They roll up and have plenty of crunch as well. The only drawback is the 4 wire belden style wire used to connect the pickups to the volume and tone pots could have been a little longer. In the bridge pickup it was Ok, but the neck pickup needs to be turned around and the wire needed stretching, making it difficult to install in a F hole guitar installation. Sound, tone strength very good.

A very nice, vintage-correct humbucker. I have it installed in the neck position of a Dean Chicago Flame V (mahogany body, maple top, mahogany neck, 22-fret ebony fingerboard), run through a Marshall JVM410H and 1960 Vintage cabinet, and the tone is very warm and well-rounded. It's considered a PAF-style pickup (as the name states), and has a very "organic" sound. It has a bit more output than several other PAF/Vintage-styled pickups--noticeably more output, but still low enough to retain the warmth and body you'd expect from pickups with PAF characteristics. It has a higher level of sustain than the DiMarzio PAF Master, and is roughly on par with the DiMarzio Air Classic and Seymour Duncan Jazz models. In fact, I'd even go so far as to say that this pickup is DiMarzio's "Jazz" model clone. Although I feel that the Jazz may have slightly more output, their DC resistance is nearly the same and the tonal properties are quite similar. 36th Anniversary is clear, articulate, and great for anything from the complex chord structures of jazz, to snarly, overdriven blues. I use this for high-gain heavy metal, and it's a real solid, smooth pickup for clean tones, and handles gain well without losing clarity and articulation. It arpeggiates well in the upper register and has a real fat sounding "woman tone" for more single note oriented soloing, and can get you close to that Eric Clapton/David Gilmour territory. I will say that the name of this pickup is a bit misleading (in a good way), because it has attributes that work very well for high-gain applications like metal, and those players might not think about this pickup when they look to buy. I find it a very satisfying addition to my rig, and look forward to unlocking more of this pickup's potential.

I replaced Gibson '57 Classics in my solid body Guild with the DiMarzio 36th Anniversary PAF's and couldn't be happier. The sound of these pickups is rich and is very sensitive to the tone controls. I also split the coils and although I wouldn't say it sounded quite as good as my Strat, it does sound good and can pass in a pinch. The matched set works best in my opinion. Both have a unique tone.
