If you have ever tried to fish out a distributor drive gear and shaft, you will know why this is a needed tool.

Very clean looking well made speciality too. It worked fine to remove a properly fitting distributor shaft from my VW Air Cooled Engine, It should be noted though, this type of tool did not remove a stuck shaft I tested it with. To do that the engine case had to be opened and some grease used on the hole and the shaft carefully pried out with a big flat blade screwdriver. Note to anyone assembling a VW Aircooled engine: Take a few moments to check your distributor shaft fit in the case while you have the case open. Make sure the shaft will slip in and out of the case. Use some medium emery cloth then clean and grease the hole for the shaft in the case. This will insure this tool will remove that shaft from the engine after it is fully assembled if needed. When installing a distributor shaft there are two shims that must be fit and held in their place down in the case past the brass gear on the crankshaft with a little heavy grease on them. If you install the shims on the distributor shaft they will not allow it to drop into place. The shaft must not be forced into place once it's close to being in place. Do not force it as this can damage the brass gear on the crankshaft.
