These pencils are so easy to work with. They sharpen without breaking and give a smooth, consistent finish. I have started using these charcoal pencils exclusively. They are so much better than the other brands I've tried.

I've only recently gotten back into art, and I've been doing a lot of sketching and drawing. Back in the day, I used the kind of charcoal pencils that you peel paper strips down to expose the charcoal, but they're messy. These charcoal pencils are more like pencils - wood on the outside, so you don't get your fingers dirty. They come in three hardnesses, but while the hardest let me draw clean, neat lines more like a mechanical pencil than charcoal, I didn't notice that much difference between the hardnesses. Even the soft was harder than the regular soft pencils I use.This is a nice set that might be a nice gift for a beginner or someone who sketches when they're out and about, but I'd have preferred it if the pencils came sharpened. Still, while none of the pencils were as soft as I wanted (adding a couple extra soft pencils to this set would be sweet), I found them to be useful, and all three hardnesses smudge well if you're doing contouring and shadows. I'll definitely be using them a lot. I'd consider this a 4 1/2 star review.

These pencils seem fine for what they are. I don't really notice a big difference between the SOFT, MEDIUM and HARD. I thought it would be more pronounced like it is in my graphite pencils. The pencils arrive unsharpened. I used my electric sharpener and they sharpened perfect. So far no breakage, more use will bring more insight into their strength when sharpening. A nice thing is the barrels are ridged so that they don't roll of your table (and then likely break the charcoal inside. The box they come in has little ridges as well to hold them in place in case you prefer to keep them in order of hardness. They blend well with the finger tip (I experimented using paper for charcoal drawings). The price point is excellent and using pencils vs. loose charcoal definitely helps keep your fingers cleaner!
