I have no idea what the quality of the stone and ink stick are, I'm assuming entry-level based on price. But it worked well and produced a thick, black ink I could dilute to desired thickness. Some have remarked in reviews the outer layer needs to be worn away to get good ink. I just took the stick directly to sandpaper and sanded off the semi-shiny outer layer on one end, down to the more matte-looking interior.

I haven't been writing calligraphy since high school, about 25 years now. I almost bought a bottle of ink and I forgot that I actually don't need ink! As I grind water on the ink stone with the ink stick, the water became darker and darker and I smelled the ink! It is the truth smell - the smell that I used to smell in high school!! How amazing. I remember I was crying because of the weekly calligraphy homework. I hated it that I had to write every week. But who knows now I want to write them again for Chinese New Year! and for teaching my son Chinese Calligraphy !! My only complaint is that it did not come with instructions on how to use, first use or after use cleaning instruction. It could be just a paper or printed on the back of the red box that came with it. I don't remember how I used to clean them, the stone and stick. So I just rinse them and rub the stone with my fingers a little. After it was dried, it sort of have some mark left on the spot I ground the ink, but that could be normal , I don't know.

This is an excellent entry level stone. It's a good value . The stone comes oiled. I used a degreaser and removed all of the oil. The ink can produce dark grey to black lines. I was surprised at the fine hairlines and dark swells this ink could produce for ornamental penmanship. Are there better stones and ink stick? Of course, but for the money, it is hard to beat this kit for the value. If anyone is interested in trying ground ink for pointed pen work, it's a nice kit to test the waters.

Easyou has provided every piece required for me to successfully begin learning the ancient art of Chinese painting. I am brand new at this, but am grateful to Easyou for giving me a chance to make new discoveries. I reserve this heavy, nice stone only for the black ink stick from Easyou. I also bought another porcelain grinding bowl for colors, however, I find that extra bowl wasn't absolutely necessary. This nice grinding stone is all a person needs, with a brush, paper and ink stick to begin.

I'm just an ignorant westerner, but I love my new ink stone, the process is really relaxing, and you get to mentally prepare for your task, clear your mind. I was curious if the ink would work with my dip pen, and it does! It writes in a gray style almost like a watermark, I probably need to work at it a bit more, but I can easily read what I wrote and the ink flows fine through the nib. I'd get me some brushes but I don't know if the english alpha bet is compatible. I have made some and stored it in a well for later use. I will bet that I need to mix or swirl the solution next time I write. The well built into the stone is not ideal for a nib, it is made for brushes, but I was able to make enough ink to roll some ink onto my nib. I recommend a separate well for that though. Patience is the main ingredient for this stone. Patience makes better ink, and better penmanship. One last thing, the block that comes with it will make a lot of ink, I still bought two extras in case. Thanks for the ink stone.

It makes great quality ink, and you can get a very very deep shade if you’d like. I use it for Japanese calligraphy, and I write a lot, like 5-10 pages a day. The ink stick isn’t even close to running out, so it should last me months (at what I consider to be heavy, above normal usage). The ink works great on normal paper, and best on rice / hanshi paper. Just be wary of using it in brush pens, it does tend to clog them over time, and you have to soak stuff in hot water to get it out. Otherwise, no complaints.
