I bought these to install the new smoke alarm. The older model has smaller base and house is more than 20 years old. The preconfigured the holes would not allow me to drill new holes. It didn’t work for me to stick it on the old base, my 2 smoke alarms both fell down. I now have them both installed on the wall using the magnetic tape and they both still up there. I guess you will need very flat surfaces in order for the tape to work. I am still glad I bought them because they worked when stick to the wall.

Horrible design! You'll sit there for hours with your arms above your head on a ladder trying to find the grooves. It's impossible. Very poor design.

It adheres to the wall with peel stick it is strong. Easy to put up and don’t need to put holes in wall. Good price.

I bought these to mount a new smoke alarm where the old yellowing one was installed. Problem was that it required adhering it to a drop ceiling panel, which just crumbled when I tried to use screws. Introduce these magnets. Holy Toledo! Not only is the magnet strong but the 3M adhesive is probably the strongest adhesive I have ever seen in action. Once it touches something, that piece is never gonna budge. Well worth the price if you have an application like putting up a smoke alarm.

The smoke detectors I've seen (including ones I recently installed) don't have metallic components/plates that would stick to magnetic discs.The adhesive pads on this product appear to work OK, but all the "magnetic" component does is add weight which might encourage adhesive failure down the line.
