Product Details: Durable and high quality mat with heat, chemical, and wear-resistance. The design features two layers of natural rubber. What is ESD? Static, formally referred to as electrostatic charge, arises from excess of electrons on one surface and a deficiency on the other. The imbalance of electrons thus causes an electrical field that is capable of influencing other objects at a distance. The charge will remain in place unless it has a path through which it can flow. It may remain in place for some time and this gives rise to the term "static electricity". The word static simply means the charge cannot be equalized or transferred through electromotive force until there is a decrease in the capacitance between two objects. The surfaces on which the charge builds up may be considered as a capacitor. What is ESD-Safe? Static dissipative materials are able to conduct electricity, but do so very slowly. Any built-up static charges dissipate without sudden discharge that can harm the internal structure of silicon circuits. Protection against ESD is required during production, storage, and shipping stages of sensitive electronic components. Awareness of ESD has risen considerably because it has been shown to have an effect on many devices. ESD can damage or cause defects in electronic products, electronic component such as Surface Mount Device components and failure in Printed Circuit Boards. Damage from ESD during mobile phone repairing is very common. ESD-Safety and protection is required across a broad range of industries including electronics, automotive, biotech and pharmaceutical, medical devices, and semiconductors.

Purchased to replace an older ESD mat.Mat arrived well-packaged, with an additional ESD "stud" for mounting on the pad (if desired). The "grounding" wire is a decent length, with a #10 screw size ring terminal for attaching to the mounting screw of a grounded AC outlet cover (I used a 3-prong plug, connecting the wire to the GROUND PIN of the plug). The surface is very flat, smooth, and FIRM - meaning you can use it to write on if necessary (my old mat was "textured", making it difficult to neatly write on it). Because it's smooth, it's very easy to clean (make sure you re-apply "staticide" after cleaning!).The mat material itself is VERY EASY to "trim", should you have to. I used SHARP scissors to trim my mat.WORK SLOWLY to ensure clean cutting - it's helpful to mark "cut lines" to ensure straight cuts (especially if you don't have a "t-square" or similar cutting guide).I ** DO INDEED ** recommend this mat for those who need an ESD-compliant work surface.
