This is one of those niche products that you never really thought you might want until you have one in your kit. Can you do everything without it? Yes. Is it fast to set up/operate? Not really. Is it kinda neat and useful once you do? Actually yes.Pro’s:-it works. I tested it with a small nanlite 60w and soft box and it works fine. The manual says it can take around 13lbs which is a decent amount but it also depends on how far the light sticks out.-the options to power the unit are quite numerous if you include the different optional power packs for pulling power from lighting units. The primary way is via USB C (Power Delivery!) The provided cable is very long, so you can connect to a battery pack or AC adapter (with the right voltage, see cons for that). The optional packs can siphon power from different connectors and split it between powering the light and the motor. They aren’t that expensive fortunately.-for control you can use the provided hard-wired control unit (also USB C but labeled so you don’t confuse it with the power cable which are NOT interchangeable) or Bluetooth control via the falcam control app. The hard wire remote also has a long cable but it’s hard to imagine this being an ideal way to do this on set. The app works pretty well and connected instantly, but having to use your phone is a little cumbersome. The best way is to use the optional wireless remote (purchased separately, unfortunately). This works flawlessly and allows you to program stops without having to mess with your phone.-positioning is very flexible. Pan/tilt range is excellent, though you have to make sure you orient the bowens mount bracket the right direction depending on if you want the light to point at a sharp angle either up or down.-speed is acceptable at max (and is able to be adjusted via the wireless controller). There is a 2 speed (slow and a faster) response depending on how far you push the joystick over. The faster speed isn’t necessarily quick but I would be worried about tipping or breaking something if it went much faster. And ultimately it’s faster than bringing down a light, adjusting, and raising it again.CON’s:-there are a bunch of add-ons that are pretty useful to make this work like it should but are sold separately. Personally I think the wireless remote should just be part of the kit. A wired remote just doesn’t make a lot of sense if you have a wireless option for not a crazy amount of money extra.-there’s no supplied AC adapter brick with the correct power output, which is a bit frustrating since it needs a minimum power draw to work and those aren’t terribly common to just have lying around. Again, you can use v/gold mounts (if you have the newer ones with PD ports on them that is), but that is yet another thing you have to mount onto a stand (or the motor itself).-there is no supplied carrying case. Considering most COB lights seem to come with their own carrying case these days and the fact that this has a lot of separate cables/adapters to manage, it seems a little cheap to not have at least a simple foam case.Overall, still an interesting product if a bit niche. It probably would be more impressive in a group where lots of lights are mounted on these and you can switch between looks quickly. I plan on using it to operate a high hair light for shoots which are notoriously a pain to adjust for solo operators. This is especially useful in multi-client shoots where things have to be adjusted constantly (provided I have enough extra time to set it up beforehand). Instead of having to cross the set, lower the light, guess at the angle, then re-raise the stand, I can just grab the remote and re-light.
