Your cart is empty. Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact. The bayonet mount allows you to reverse mount the hood making it easy to store in your camera bag.

The only reason this isn't getting a fifth star is because there is a slight gap between the hood and the lens that allows a very small amount of light through. Other than that, the hood was well worth the money spent for it!

Time was when every decent lens came with a correctly shaped and sized lens hood; one that would protect the lens from off-angle, non-image creating, light without causing vignetting. That sadly is no longer true for many lenses sold by Canon. What is worse Canon charges an outlandish price for the separately sold shades.Enter the Fotodiox Dedicated Lens Hood. Inexpensive. Of antiquate construction quality. Appropriately sized and shaped. Reasonably priced.Summed up in three words: Why buy Canon's?

It is cheap soft plastic, rattles a bit on the lens, slightly sticks when putting on and taking offNo damage in sticking a bit as it is soft plastic.Looks like it cost about 20 cents to manufacturer.However it works.I would still buy it again, as the canon model, which probably costs 50 cents to manufacturer (in qty) and is superior in quality should be included with all canon lens (except maybe the kits lens under $100, i.e., that cost ~$30 to manufacturer).At this point i refuse to pay canon the exhorbant amount they charge for there lens hoods, and something that should be included with their lens.Canon - if you are listening this is penny wise and pound foolish, it hurts your otherwise excelent reputation.Other manufacturers - if you are listening - make an equivilant lens hood out of top-quality plastic and tight design specs, sell it for $8 to $10 (tops), and people will buy it exclusively.Of course for Tamron, Sigma, etc, i bet they are happy with Canons policy, for they include both a hood and bag, and in that respect give a nicer out of the box impression.
