As an avid baker with over 20 years of experience, I have accumulated various rolling pins, including two French rolling pins, a handled rolling pin with ball bearings, an adjustable depth rolling pin, and specialized pins for fondant and other decorating purposes. This Frieling dowel rolling pin has become my favorite tool for rolling dough. Unlike tapered French rolling pins that limit the rolling area to the center, this dowel-shaped design allows the use of the entire pin, providing greater control and precision in rolling dough down to 1/8” thickness. Its weight and diameter facilitate proper rolling without pressing or stretching the dough. The diameter of my handled rolling pin is too large, and the handles restrict my grip and movement. In contrast, the Frieling rolling pin, while similar in weight, is much more manageable and doesn’t feel cumbersome. More importantly, I can position my hands where I want/need as I roll, which allows for better tactile feedback between my hands, the pin, and the dough.

The ATK recommended rolling pin would not deliver to my area so I purchased this one and it does not disappoint. I'm happy it's American made and of good quality.

Just what I was looking for. I wanted a rolling pin that was not super small in diameter or short in length. This fit the bill. Not real heavy but has some weight to it. Fits in my drawers. Feels like a quality tool and is well made and smooth. I consider this a perfect replacement for the handled spinning pins. This rolling pin puts you one step closer to the dough you are rolling. You get a better feel for the dough.

Have had many of the traditional type rolling pin. Decided to try the type of rolling pin most professional bakers use. The smoothness of the pin is great. Get very even dough without much effort. Won't go back to handled rolling pins.. this type really is better and easier to use.

The Frieling Maple French Rolling Pin is a beautifully made hardwood rolling pin. It truly is a classic. It is made with very nice wood and the length and taper are just right. However, seasoning: On the wrap Frieling says to season it wiht mineral oil about the size of a quarter. In the first picture (the full size, it is shown before it is oiled. (I went over it, perhaps 20 times over the course of half an hour) and used half a bottle of mineral oil, and I am not sure I am done yet. It is still absorbing oil! (and I am in a VERY wet environment, the second wettest on earth, I understand). I must be kiln dried wood because it is very dry. It is worth taking the time to season it properly. In the close up you can see wood shavings on my stove top. These were still coming off the wood after I had worked on it for 15-20 minutes. You do not want that in your dough.I oiled it on top of my pizza peel (knowing it could use another coat). That is made with wood which is not as nice as the Frieling, but after 10+ years of maintenance has some very nice color and finish. I typically use beeswax (and some very good beeswax). Whatever you use, made sure that it is food safe. Either buy food safe mineral oil, or beeswax (as good as you can find). Sadly 99% of what I have bought as beeswax on Amazon is not, it is a petroleum product. What I have been using is some lovely beeswax from Spain, which I did get on Amazon, but with a very good cutting board, and I wish I knew where to get more. I would recommend getting it from a local bee keeper, and if you can not find one, from a health food or organic food store. It is worth it.I am expecting that ultimately, the pin will approach the color of the peel....but that will take some time.
