I've never had a tailor's clapper, and I've wanted one for a couple of years. When I saw this one available, I couldn't wait to get it.I am not a naturally gifted sewist, so I need all the help I can get. I am learning quilting, where crisp seams can make all the difference in the world, and I see people using tailors clappers to get their seams "just so."The wood is a really nicely-sanded piece of hardwood. Note that it is hardwood -- not some cheap pine. The clapper is not unusually heavy, but know this isn't balsa wood or even pine. It feels more like maple, though I'm no expert in wood species. But it's substantial in a good way.It comes with a nice drawstring pouch for carrying, if that's your thing. I may end up not using the pouch (or using it for something else), simply because I'm more of a "grab and go" kind of person who won't necessarily want to be dealing with a the drawstring pouch when I have my sewing groove on. Also, the pouch is a little bit on the tighter side, which means the clapper doesn't slide right out -- it needs to be extracted, and when I'm sewing I'm just not in the mood for that sort of thing.But oh my -- this is a VERY nice clapper, and it keeps seams sharp!

Smooth and comfortable to hold straight out of the box. Wood has a fine grain and appears to be one piece, so I am hopeful it will hold up over time (and all that steam) and not split. It has a good weight to it. Performed exactly as expected - this is the secret to those beautiful super flat seams.

I love this item! It’s my second one I purchased within a week of receiving and using the first one! It is by far the best clapper I’ve ever used! The seams turn out perfect every time! Having 2 of these makes quilting so much better!
