How can I tell if the gas cap needs to be replaced?
1. Cap doesn't screw on tightly
Most gas tank filler caps/fuel tank caps are designed to make a clicking sound when fully tightened. If the cap doesn't click, or if it clicks and then loosens, then this may be a sign that the cap needs to be replaced.
2. Vehicle smells like fuel
If the fuel tank filler cap/cap seal is damaged or worn, it may cause fuel vapors in the tank to leak from the filler neck.
3. Check Engine Light comes on
A damaged or failing gas cap doesn't necessarily cause a major performance issue, but it could trigger the Check Engine Light and prevent the vehicle from passing an test. If you suspect there may be a problem with the gas cap, take a minute to check the gas cap.
