Product Description

Mountaineer is our 'all-purpose' carbon tripod family, both extremely rigid and light in weight. Understandably, Mountaineers are the most popular tripods in the Gitzo range. Now stiffer and stronger than ever, with newly developed Carbon exact tubes and a refined top spider design, they are also faster and easier to use, thanks to the redesigned G-lock system, Ground Level Set mechanism, and leg angle selectors.GT3542L is a long 4-section, Series 3 tripod designed to reach eye-level when fully extended. The G3542L is recommended for professional cameras with 300mm lenses (up to a maximum of 400mm). Thanks both to their new design and to the use of Carbon exact tubes, Series 3 Mountaineer tripods are lighter in weight yet more rigid than their predecessors. Solid tripod for landscape photography. Great for travel, but not a typical travel tripod.

Best tripod that I have ever owned. Just a perfect size and weight for my use.

Too make a long story short, the center column froze after two months, the wingnut will not turn. I sent it to the authorized Gitzo/Manftotto service facility - C.R.I.S., in Arizona. They held it for 7 weeks and returned it unfixed. I spoke to the service manager who says he checked the tripod before it left the facility, I believe him, but why is the center column still frozen? Bottom line - I love the design and functionality of this tripod, but Gitzo/Manfrotto quality control and service is horrible. Will look elsewhere for my next tripod.EDIT: Gitzo service fixed the tripod again, promptly. I spoke, again, to the service manager and he acknowledged that the Gitzo has a problem with frozen center column. I now the leave the center column BARELY tightened, since I am deathly afraid of the wingnut freezing again. For a (then) $1000, that is insanely poor quality. I always heard that Gitzo was the gold standard, but apparently that time has passed.

Overall:At 1.95kg, this tripod is extremely light given its strength and rigidity. This tripod is definitely not suitable for travelling unless you are fine with checking in the tripod or lug a 2kg tripod around.Pros:- Strong and rigid - good strength to weight ratio- Easy to dismantling of the legs for cleaning- Good tripod base design - provide locking screw to secure your tripod head- Auto retracting leg angle tabs.Cons:- The rubber feet are extremely slick and slippery on normal tile/parquet flooring - will prefer more versatile feet given the price tag tied to it. Tripod also doesn't come with tripod bag or sleeves and have to purchase them separately - a huge disappointment.- Tab to adjust angle of tripod legs looks rather filmsy and may break easily (saw it online recently)

Great rigidity, nice size and very light weight. The construction is normal for Gitzo which is always bit rougher than other tripod manufacturers. The center column does not extend or retract smoothly and there is a stupid rubber O ring that is supposed to cushion the legs when the tripod is folded. This O ring fell off repeatedly so I just discarded it. I have used Gitzo for years so I know their foibles, but honestly, this tripod is extremely overpriced for the build quality. It should also have foam sleeves on the legs for the price they charge. The legs get red hot when the tripod is sitting in the sun. Beware.

Love it. It has reduced any unwanted camera shake. It is much heavier than my previous Benro, but the trade off with no camera vibrations is worth it.

Compared to Ser 2 GT2542LS, which I like better. Pros: heavier tubing. Easy adjust hight with center column (important feature for 4X5 field camera). Seems as solid as Ser 2. Open (non extended) about eye level for me (6'2"),(so is Ser 2, LS). Con: Heavier than Ser 2 and collapsed length no shorter than Ser 2. Feet on this are slick and slide on hardwood/tile floors, making this less stable overall. Also, Ser 2 feet have built in spikes, while with this one, the are tool applied option. Mounitng plate smaller: The RRR BH-55 head "hangs over". Large plate on Ser 2 a stability plus, I think.
