I use in my home workshop a large assortment of files and file handles. My varied collection includes all sorts of brands, styles and sizes. Generally, I’m most fond of wooden file handles and not so keen about the ones made of plastic. That’s because I prefer the comfort, tactile feel, and overall comfort that wood typically offers. However, a family member happened to gift me one of these blue plastic Grobet handles and I have to admit that I really like it! In fact, it’s now become my favorite and most used handle type. Go figure. But the reasons for this are many.First and foremost, I find this Grobet handle to be extremely comfortable… and that’s the #1 attribute I seek of any file handle. For me, nothing’s worse than using a handle that feels awkward and/or ill-suited in my hand. Just like a chef and their knife, I too prefer to use a handle that feels like it’s a literal extension of my hand, especially during any period of extended use. This plastic handle is quite solid and surprisingly well-balanced, while also having a very nice heft to it that’s anything but fatiguing. It measures exactly 4 inches from end-to-end. That size, coupled with its special ergonomic shape manages to fit just perfectly into the palm of my size large male hand. Further, the shape of the narrower and tapered portion towards the end where you insert the file has just the right shape to facilitate comfortable placement of my thumb on its top while cradling the underside with my forefinger. By contrast, most shapes of my other handles are also comfortable but come nowhere close to the overall “perfect fit” I enjoy with this particular handle. The micro-textured surface has a very subtle feel to it but still manages to provide a very nice, non-slip grip. This is especially noticeable whenever the handle becomes wet, as I’ve discovered while occasionally wiping it off with a wet rag. I also appreciate that the few shallow rings encircling the handle seem to provide some additional grip and hand-cooling function, although I’m uncertain if that’s supposed to be their specific function, if any at all.In my opinion, the absolute best feature of this Grobet handle is that it’s the screw-on type, whereby you simply unscrew the file in use and insert a new one. The tang-gripping insert, which seems to be of very good quality, is made of tempered metal and consists of two threaded sections of different diameters. This assures proper alignment and positive hold for files, and also allows the handle to be reused. I really like this ease of use and have experienced no issues whatsoever with the file slipping during use.Unlike the majority of my other handles, this one is manufactured with a convenient hole at the top which permits it to be hung up for storage. Not only is this convenient, but it also saves me from having to drill such a hole myself, if so desired. This handle really shines, in terms of durability. Although constructed of plastic, which is not my preferred handle material, Grobet claims that it’s unbreakable plastic. While I’m usually pretty gentle with all of my tools, I can share the following. On the few rare occasions when I’ve somehow managed to drop this handle, by no fault but my own, from my workbench onto the concrete floor below, it has always come out unscathed… much to my relief. That’s fairly impressive, if you ask me.Finally, while my usual preference is to only use ‘Made in USA’ tools, I certainly value this file being ‘Made in Italy’. That’s because most products manufactured in Italy usually tend to be of a much better quality than other imported ones. Worth noting here is that the country of origin info is prominently molded into the center of the handle where it says ‘GROBET’ and beneath that ‘MADE IN ITALY’.In conclusion, I most definitely recommend this handle and certainly intend on purchasing some more for my own use.I hope this info has been of some help!
