My puppies bang on it on the way out but have yet to figure out that if I am not right next to them they can bang on it to call me to let them out. Instead, it hangs, they wizz, and I clean. It's actually pretty amusing. Only one puppy stands on her back legs and bangs on it. The other jumps across the door and completely misses it EVERY TIME! But he does get credit for standing right in front of it though! Ya gotta love it.I do feel though, it's a bit expensive for what you get. I ranked it three stars because I don't dislike it. I just don't love it either. Good luck.

I highly recommend using the Poochie Bells, especially when housebreaking a puppy. I followed what other reviewers suggested and hung them on the wall right next to my door, rather than from the door handle. It made sense to me - otherwise the bells would be ringing every time the door was opened for anything, which I thought might be confusing to my dogs. We started our little tiny 10 week old toy poodle puppy right out with these. We followed the directions, and every time we took her outside we would first ring the bells (with her little paw or gently with her nose), say "Ring the bells ... and go OUT!" and then open the door and take her outside. (We were careful to be sure that the bells didn't actually frighten her, because in our case they are pretty big compared to the size of the puppy, haha.) I will admit it felt a little silly sometimes, but we kept it up anyway, always with a cheerful voice and positive attitude. I am pleased to report that she learned very quickly to use them herself! She is three months old now and it is the cutest thing to see this tiny little dog either swing her paw and bat the bells or nudge them with her nose when she wants to go outside. They make a jingle sound like Christmas sleigh bells, which is a pleasant way for her to call us to the door. Much nicer than crying or scratching, and we can hear it from a surprising distance in our home. The fact that they are not on a heavy strap actually makes it easier for the dog to ring them loudly. Like I said, I highly recommend these. They are a clever, fun, and practical idea.

OK, if I could give this product 6 stars I would. We were having a big problem with our Boxer puppy not catching on to the in/out concept of housebreaking. It was driving us crazy. He was well past where it should have sunk in. We were trying to be vigilant, but accidents were still happening, and undoubtedly so when we were away and came back.We tried Nature's Miracle, we tried being vigilant, monitoring when he would drink water, taking him out for frequent trips outside, etc. but didn't have any success. Then we thought we'd try this. It seemed like a gimmick, but we were will to through $20 bucks at the problem to try and solve it. My expectations were low.Very thankfully, I was completely wrong. Our dog took to it right away. For the first week, every time we opened the door to the backyard we rang the bells, encouraged him to hit it with his nose, and said "Ring the bells" before opening the door. In a very short time our little guy caught on, and would hit the bells lightly with his nose to make them sound, at which point we'd jump up and open the door -- and he'd go out and successfully do is business. It was awesome. Now, we always know when he wants to go out. The bells aren't too loud or soft either. We can hear them anywhere we are on our first floor, but not too loud that they are annoying when rung. Either way, they work so we're happy.Plus, they travel easily. We took them with us to our various families' homes over Christmas and our dog used them there as well, much to our families' surprise.EXCELLENT PRODUCT -- I strongly recommend it.

This seems like a great idea. I purchased these for our dog after visiting a friend who had them. Her dog rang the bells to go outside while I was there and I was sold. Ordered from Amazon the same evening. My dog just doesn't get it. She loves it when "I" ring the bells and wiggles all around the door to go out, but as far as ringing the bells on her own - It's just not happening. We followed the training instructions consistently for about a month and gave up. I gave it 4 stars because I think it's a great idea and I've seen it work perfectly for someone else.It just didn't work for me and my goofy dog.****************OK. I'm adding to this review after having the bells for about a year and a half. Apparently, my dog just needed a better reason to ring the bells. We've had a stray cat adopt our house and he is constantly hanging out in the yard. The dog thinks this cat is the best thing ever created by God. She now rings the bells incessantly to go out and see her new cat buddy. We finally had to remove the bells from the door before she drove us all bananas.
