I couldn't get the Handy Stitch sewing machine to work at first. After another Vine reviewer mentioned putting the batteries in opposite of the metal battery placement guide, it worked--and the battery case cover fit much better, too. After using a regular sewing machine for many years, I found this underwhelming, although I can certainly see times when it would be useful: for emergencies, when traveling, or when space is an issue. Of course, hand sewing is always an option! The instructions, which you have to read with a magnifying glass or enlarge on your phone or copier, show a combination power button-lock; however, this model does NOT have a lock. A 5-year old video on Youtube (wonderful, look for the Handy Stitch handheld sewing machine by Easy Sewing for Beginners) also shows the lock. The lock makes it safer and prevents unwanted stitching, and most other handheld machines have one. It just has the power button on top. This and most other handheld machines use just one thread to make a chain stitch, which is vastly inferior to the lockstitch made by real sewing machines, which use two threads from a bobbin and a spool. The chain stitch requires knotting in a specific way so that it doesn't unravel. Fabric can't be reversed, as the straight stitch is only made on one side. This is fine for hems and other things, it's just important to know the difference. There is no speed control, no ability to change the stitch width--except by moving the fabric faster or slower--and no real guides to make a perfectly straight stitch, all features taken for granted on real sewing machines. The accessories are of the quality you would expect in a budget-priced kit. The scissors cut fabric only in the middle of the blades, but it's nice to have them for an emergency. There are 13 pre-wound bobbins. (If you need another bobbin, you'll have to wind it elsewhere.) Thread snips, needle threader, and a spare needle are welcome, while everything you need for basic hand sewing is also included, even a pack of assorted buttons and variety of needles. The wooden box keeps everything tidy and has a cute design on the top.

First, I want to say that this was packed very well. The wooden box was inside a foam box that had plastic corner protectors on each and every corner. The foam box was inside a cardboard box. I believe the way it was packed protected the wooden box from any shipping damage that could occur. The wooden box has three compartments. One for the portable sewing machine itself, and two for the threads, bobbins, pins, needles, pin cushion, buttons, seam ripper, thimbles, safety pins and tape measurer. The lid of the box has a sleeve where you can slip the pair of scissors that are included. This is the third handheld sewing machine I have owned. My first was from 20+ years ago and I loved the convenience. I tried another but the threading path just didn’t work well at all. This Handheld Sewing Machine has a much easier thread path. As with any portable handheld sewing machine there is only one thread so you must tie off the stitches or they will just unravel. The power button is just an off/on button so I suggest storing the sewing machine with the batteries on the side, if you leave them in you could accidently turn on the sewing machine. Another reason to remove the batteries is so the batteries don’t leak in the machine if you leave it unattended for a long period of time. This can ruin the sewing machine. The instructions are printed very small, difficult to read but the information is on the listing so you can save or print the listing and have clear directions on how to knot the thread so it doesn’t unravel as well as a fully labeled photo and battery installation instructions. The whole purpose of a handheld sewing machine is to be able to sew items like curtains that are hanging, or simple seam repair, hemming or minor repairs. They are great for taking to a relatives or friends home to fix something in a pinch. They are even great to toss in your suitcase when you travel, you never know when a seam might go or a hem fall out. They do not take the place of a regular sewing machine, but they are a great addition to any sewing supplies.

Impressive handheld sewing kit. Comes with all items as pictured. The bobbins are pre-wound (and it looks like there’s two disposable bobbins). All tools and plenty of thread are included for smaller sewing projects. Only issue I had, and maybe it depends on how you’re reading it, was that the battery placement “guide” is backwards – or at least it’s backwards to me. I put the batteries in to correspond with the metal labels and the machine didn’t work. I went through the manual and double checked and still wasn’t working … I thought it was broken. Then I decided to change the battery placement and was “fixed”. The push button is sensitive so be ready to go … works great and comes with everything!

This is one of the best products I have ever got at Amazon Vine. I am not good at sewing but I needed a sewing machine for some craft product. This one comes in a really nice wooden box with all sorts of supplies and tools, thread, scissors, thimbles. I wish I had got one before just to fix small thinks around the house. It comes with a single page of instructions in very small print but I was able to figure out everything I needed. This is probably not a product for large projects, it takes a while to figure out how to get your stitching straigh but I managed to get there holding the fabric with a clamp. It is really great for someone that just needs to fix some clothes, shorten pants or include some fabric on other projects. I will be giving thois a lot of use.

Fairly easy to use. The introductions could be better. I wanted to hem some pants, but it's going to take some practice. It's probably better to use a real machine to get the quality I'm going for due to needing both hands to hold the pants steady, but this is good for quick fixes. Seems to have everything that you would need.
