This is a nice large roughing gouge. Came sharp. Great for large wood pieces, rounds the wood in no time. Well worth the money.

This 2" roughing gouge is so nice and comfortable to use both because of the length of the handle and the size and weight of this chisel making it easy to cut without concern of bouncing on the tool rest. It also came presharpened with a very sharp edge that was sealed in wax prior to shipping...very pleased with the performance so far

I have several tools from Hurricane. They’re not cheap and not nearly the most expensive. They do a really nice job. No need to pay for a more expensive name brand. Good heavy HSS that sharpens up well, holds a nice edge and turns out nice work.

Let me start by saying so far I have only used it once to rough out an end grain cherry blank....in that one use, I was able to see the quality of the gouge. The steel "looks" like my sorry tool steel, Not like my other Chinese tool steel which were purchased at the "freight" store down by the "harbor"....At first glance you can feel the quality in how heavy this tool is, I was not expecting how thick it is. For this pri e I expected less to be honest, I was pleasantly surprised. It came moderately sharp, I did not sharpen it yet, however, I plan too of course. After turning a small bowl from this cherry I even had to sharpen my Sorby tools...this one held right up here with them.Bottom line: take the chance, at 1/4 the price of other similar sized gouges, I feel that I've got my money's worth for sure. Keep in mind I've only used it once however, if something awful happens I will update my review.

The grind was a little bit off but that was easy enough to fix. It was not super-sharp as delivered, but many cutting tools require honing, lapping, or sharpening at first anyway. No big deal. What do you expect for $50? It's HSS, it sharpens fine, and it works great. A great value

This is the tool that I do 95% of my turning with. It's beefy enough that I can use it as an exercise club! While it won't give more than a decent warm-up, its bulk certainly helps it resist chatter while cutting on the lathe. It makes turning go at a speed that is actually profitable compared to the 1" roughing gouge I had been using.I like how wide its edge is. Since it's curved you only ever use a small section of the blade to cut. However it's still a wider cutting section than using a smaller gouge and since it has such an ample compass you effectively have three cutting edges on one tool!I turn pens from natural limbs and end up using the central section for the initial rounding and either wing for wasting material. I took those wings back a little bit on the grinder and now they cut like over-sized round scrapers, removing material smoothly and with beautiful speed. If could choose but two lathe tools to work with on a spindle turning it would be this one and a smaller scraper for adding on the final touches. As for whether this is actual high speed steel I don't doubt it.I'm something of a pen turner and I can turn 5 or 6 pens in soft wood before I become dissatisfied with quantity and quality of shavings flying off my work. For hard but well behaved wood like mahogany I'll cut 3 and then dutifully touch up the edge. Working with material that is just inexplicably hard I'll cut 1 or 2 and then I do what I must.If that sounds unsatisfactory to anyone then your tools probably aren't sharpened often enough to do their job properly and you're probably shooting yourself in the foot time-wise for being that much a miser. All in all, for me, it paid for itself within two or so hours, and if it last me a year I think I should have received a tremendous value in return for what I paid.

I already had a great Sorby 1-1/2" roughing gouge. But the price for this one was very good; and I have found the other Hurricane tools to be a pretty good deal of quality vs cost. I had to sharpen it out of the box. That's not the end of the world. Sharp gouges straight from the factory are a pleasure, as you can put them right to wood; however, over the life of the tool, it means only one extra sharpening if you need to do the initial honing. The gouge works well, and holds an edge well - the two important aspects of any gouge. In some situations, the sheer size does make the chance of a catch very small.
