I needed a simple wall switch timer for our outside lighting, on at 8:45 pm - off at 6:30 am. What we got was an over engineered mini computer. We are in our late 70s so it took awhile to get it working. Two days ! At least it not noisy like the older electric / mechanical style. If you are younger or have a 9 year old in the home that can install it this switch is great.

If you can find a circuit breaker and turn it off, then have a regular and Philips-head screwdriver, you can install this.It took me longer to walk up and down my stairs turning off (and on) breakers and then trying to stuff all the wires back into the outlet box then it did to actually attach all the wires.Programming was similarly easy using the SmartThings App, which meant it was readily available to my Alexa and now I do not have to walk 20 feet around two corners to turn on my kitchen lights. Two complaints:1. Why no faceplate? They are very inexpensive, and adding one to the box would not break the manufacturer's budget. In many cases, including mine, I am installing this in replacement for an old school light switch, which will not have a suitable plate, so I had to go find one. Besides just being odd, the picture on the box and all the marketing shots *show a faceplate*, so not including one is simply... off.2. Putting your brand name ("Intermatic") on the external portion of the switch is obnoxious. My home is not a product placement advertising opportunity. While this switch *works*, I would not buy it again for the two reasons stated above. There are plenty of other options out there that do not have these shortcomings.

This switch represents my first dive into home automation. I have heard about the Intermatic brand for years and thought this switch would work well for my front porch light. The unit is heavy duty! Comes with the switch, wire nuts and instructions (no wall plate - which I don't understand at this price point). The wires are clearly labeled on the switch body, and includes a red "traveler" for three-way installations. It also has a neutral (white) wire which is required for proper installation. I use this unit as a single-pole light switch.Installation was simple enough, it fits in a standard electrical box, but the setup - for me - was glitchy using the ABRA app on my iPhone 13. I had much better luck with the Alexa app after I scanned the Matter QR code located on the front of the switch body behind the wall plate. One thing to note is that the QR code identifies the device as a light rather than switch in Alexa. The unit has worked as advertised in the past two weeks. I expect a long service life if the quality is as good as it appears.

Most of the rooms in my house have smart light switches, except for a storage room. I never thought about installing a smart switch there since I usually go in the room, get something and shut the light, and leave. A few times recently, I carried something out of the room and didn't shut the light because my hands were full. I planned to go back and shut it, but forgot, and the lights remained on for a few days before I noticed it was still on. I decided to get a smart switch for that room. Most of the switches I have cost me almost twice as much as the Intermatic Abra switch, so I decided to try it out. It worked out well. I installed it in a matter of minutes and manually turned the lights on and off. Now came the tricky part: getting it to work remotely. I downloaded the Intermatic Abra app on my iPhone and added the device. It worked on the first shot! Now I wanted to control the light using Alexa, so I added the skill to the Alexa app, and surprise, it worked when I told Alexa to turn on and off the lights. This had to be the easiest device I have ever added to my smart home setup. I don't have any other "matter" devices, but it's only a matter of time until I add more devices.

This switch can use the Matter protocol which makes it easy to connect to your HomeKit, Alexa, or Google Home network. This can be more standardized and secure than some "Smart" apps that connect to unregulated cloud servers to control other IoT devices. Configuration took less than 5 minutes, using my phone to scan the Matter QR code on the switch and an AppleTV as the controller. There's another QR code on the cardboard box for the switch in case you installed the switch plate before you try to configure the switch.Note: If this is the first Matter-enabled device, setup may be a bit more challenging, as you may need to configure your Matter hub (like your smart speaker or Apple TV) first. The switch can be wired for single switch or 3-way (or 4-way) installations. You only need one smart switch when using it on a 3- or 4-way circuit. Just replace the 3-way switch closest to your matter hub or wireless access point. Some minor issues:This switch requires a neutral wire. It will not work on some older single switch wiring where the cable to the switch is hot on both sides (typically with the white wire marked with black tape). This switch is is big and has no wiring terminals... just permanently installed lead wires. You'll need room in your electrical box for the switch, all wires, PLUS 5 wire nuts. Good luck getting it into a tight-fitting box. You may want to use crimp connectors (if your building inspector/code allows them) or inline lever wire nuts to save space in the box.Lastly, if you want to configure it using the Intermatic ABRA app, it appears that the app is a white label version of Smart Life... an app which some users have concerns about using. When you try to connect with the app, the device creates a network with "smartlife" in the SSID, and when you register your "Intermatic" account, the response email comes from a domain with "ismartlife" in the name. I'll be deleting the ABRA app and my account and sticking with my Matter connection through the Apple Home app.It would be nice if they also produced a dimming version of this switch.
