Sadly, this item didn't last long. Installed in June and it's dead already. I'm fairly handy and this was a plug and play install to replace the original livewell pump. We don't fish that often, and have only used the livewell 3 or 4 times this summer. I went to the local marine shop and got another pump to replace this one. The technician's there said there is no difference between a bilge pump and a live well pump. So I put another bilge pump in for the live well. We'll see how this lasts.

I have a 1995 boat with the same model pump.The new one fits exactly like the original model almost 30 years later. Runs quite but is hardly ever needed.

I bought this to repair a Polar Products, Active Ice cooler for my knee injury. The 12vdc pumps that are factory installed in the Active Ice machine fail within days. After going thru 3 different Active Ice machines (warranty replacements), I decided to keep the cooler and replace the pump myself. This model was quieter, and its almost a perfect fit (although I did have to change the outlet port). After seeing all the other excellent reviews of this product as a bilge pump, I just wanted add an alternative use for this pump in a medical device. This pump is definitely more reliable and its built to last for years of trouble free operation. FYI, anyone going thru knee surgery should consider active cooling to reduce the swelling and ease the pain.

VERY EASY TO INSTALL. WORKS VERY WELL. I GIVE IT A 4 STAR BECAUSE THE ONLY THIMG I FOUND NEGATIVE IS THE BASE PLATE SHOWS .....( TO TAKE IT OFF FOR MOUNTING). TURN CLOCKIWSE TO UNLOCK AND COUNTER CLOCKWISE TO LOCK. VERY DIFFICULT TO UNLOCK BECAUSE IT HAS FOUR LOCK TABS. EACH ONE HAS TO BE PUSHED DOWN TO RELEASE. I FOUND IT IMPOSSIBLE TO UNLOCK. BUT I DID NOT NEED TO UNLOCK BASE TO INSTALL. HOWEVER, I WONDER IF I WILL BE ABLE TO UNLOCLK SHOULD I NEED TO CLEAN OUT TRASH ETC. OTHER THAN THAT I WOULD RECOMMEND THE PRODUCT FOR THE PRICE.

This 500 GPH fits into the same base as an older May Fair 600 GPH pump. Johnson apparently bought the old company and kept making the same pumps with the same dimensions. The advantage here is that if you have a May Fair or Johnson pump the pump can be replaced by turning the pump a quarter turn and the new pump can be installed with an opposite quarter turn twist by hand. The mounting for a bilge pump is way down below the engine and on most boats mounting the pump at the lowest point in the bilge is difficult if not impossible. If the pump is mounted where it is easily accessible it does not sit as deep in the bilge and all of the water cannot be pumped out. The first pump lasted 24 years and this pump has the same design and maybe a little better quality.
