The New and Blue KickBoxx Pro! Drumming on the go just got a whole lot groovier! The Toca Percussion KickBoxx Pro suitcase drum set from Sweetwater expands on the offerings of the original model, now including an extra 10-inch tom, two more retractable accessory posts, and a cymbal attachment rod. Not to mention its sleek new Cobalt Blue finish! With both 10-inch toms, a 10-inch snare with throw off, and a 14-inch bass drumhead, this suitcase model quickly becomes the perfectly versatile timekeeping solution for buskers, club performers, and musicians on the move. Despite their shallow builds, each shell, including the bass drumhead, is tunable to your liking for a comfortable surface-striking response that's just right for your playing style. I got this because it has a small footprint and could fit in the limited space at our church. I gotta say, taking my drums set out to my car in one trip without help was pretty amazing. That being said, there are a few things I don’t like. The Tom mounts do not provide much flexibility for tilting or positioning, which made playing uncomfortable. Also, since I like having my ride cymbal at the 1:30 position, I thought the included cymbal holder would work, but it was not sturdy enough to hold a heavy cymbal. I was scared through the whole mass that the cymbal might rotate down and crash during the homily or something. But, with another $40 I fixed those problems. I added a cowbell mount with a ball joint to the handle for that Tom and attached a Tom mount to the suitcase to hold a boom arm I already have. Those two things put this set over the top.One last thing, I which Toca had included a 12” drum for the “floor” tom. It would be nice to be able to get some lower tones for that Tom.That said I like this kit. Since I already had the other gear, it was an easy add for convenience and flexibility.

Drums all patch inside of the bass drum. The sound is impressive for such a small footprint.

I truly wanted to support this drum kit and gave it the benefit of the doubt, as I imagine the team is small and trying to grow. However, the first kit I ordered had a gaping hole punctured into the box itself. The packaging was not damaged, so a broken instrument was delivered (also took a week). I’m not sure if they sent me a prototype or something, but packaging was falling off, the hardware was wrong, and there was no instruction. So, I sent it back. It was a huge effort to repackage it well and return by the way. Normally, I would have left it at that and moved on, but again, I really wanted to give it a chance.I ordered another one. This one, the buckles were misaligned, and one of them broken and offset. I managed to fix it myself, which took some precision tools and a lot of patience. This second one was packaged a little better - it actually had bubble wrap. And a printed “manual” but the images were so dark you couldn’t tell what they were of. The hardware was different from the first kit, so I could tell there was a discrepancy.I had PTSD from the first kit, and the snare box had a sticker that said “no snare” so I was afraid that they sent 3 toms. Thankfully, the snare was in one of the tom boxes. The snare and toms sound surprisingly decent with a nice resonance once you tune them (which I guess is the point of drums) - made in Taiwan and by Remo. They sound more like if timbales and small toms had a baby. The kick head is also fine (sounds more like a floor tom), the sound of the box is ok - I put a pillow inside and it works for what it is.The added crash cymbal mount on the Pro is a neat idea, but a design flaw is when you hit the cymbal, the whole box vibrates. There was a little hook to hang your kick pedal inside… but it is pretty much useless as it doesn't fit when all the drums are mounted inside (unless you want to break/scratch it).Overall, I’d say that the drum itself is surprisingly good for how compact it is. There are still design improvements to be made, ie crash cymbal, kick hook, etc. There REALLY needs to be a QC in the assembly, packaging and shipping of this product though, otherwise the effort in the design will be lost through damaged goods.
