Finally got around to installing them. Easy to install, look good, sound good. Would have gone with five stars, but I want to be sure they are not prone to false alarms.

My house has 5 wired smoke alarms. They were originally installed when I purchased the house. I replaced the batteries many times over the last 9 years. One of the original detectors started chirping and would not be consoled by any amount of loving care and battery changes. I needed to replace it, and I figured the rest would need changing as well. So I ordered a three to try them out and set to changing out the first one. They are the same brand as the original which helped make the job easier. The same base mount could be used to hold the detectors, but the shape of the connector was different. This meant that I needed to replace the original ones with the ones in the packaging. The wiring used twist connectors for the three wires. This kept this a fairly simple job. The first replacement took about 30 minutes for learning and an abundance of caution. The last of the five took maybe 19 minutes to replace. The best thing about the new detectors, they have built-in rechargeable batteries that last 10 years! No more changing batteries.

I was sick of my alkaline battery Kidde units chirping every year, invariably when I was traveling. My wife HATED that. These new Kidde are powered units with lithium battery backup. Still, I had to replace the wiring harness becuase they didn't match the old units. It was all pretty easy. Also, I feel like they are less prone to false alarms. The one near the kitchen used to go off frequently. The new one has not sounded once during cooking.

Several reviews complained about needing an adapter, but I didn't need one since I was replacing a newer Kidde detector--or so I thought. Nope, I need the adapter! Why in the world does Kidde do this? Either use the old plug connection or furnish the adapter with the unit! Or if not that, at least make it clear you need the adapter! The instructions that come with the unit don't even mention an adapter! They just explain how to rewire with the new pigtail plug. Not cool Kidde!
