Tailgate Latch Lock Left and Right 15921948 15921949 Compatible with EXT Sierra Avalanche 1500 2500 3500 HD Classic 1999-2007
The tailgate latch allows the tailgate to lock onto the latch bolts on both sides of the truck floor when closed, and then open when operating the tailgate handle. It is also the location for connecting the tailgate cable to prevent the tailgate from completely falling when opened.

Product worked better then not closing at all, but I still have to close tailgate and pull back to make sure it doesn't pop open when driving.
