Professional F-Style Mandolin

The LM-600 hand-carved, nitrocellulose-finished F-model mandolin is a tribute to classic design techniques. From the hand-carved, hand-graduated solid spruce top and solid maple back and sides to the abalone/mother-of-pearl headstock inlay, these mandolins were built to represent Golden Age craftsmanship updated for the modern era.

The Loar Hand Carved Workshop

Carved and assembled in The Loar Hand Carved Design Workshop, then hand-rubbed with nitrocellulose lacquer, the LM-600 has an authentic pre-war-style bark that will impress even the most avid vintage purist.

Hand-Assembled and Finished

The LM-600 is assembled with a rounded "V" profile maple neck and bound ebony fretboard, compensated ebony bridge and vintage-style Gotoh tuning machines. The bone nut and ebony bridge allow for the singing sustain that professional players look for in a high-quality hand-assembled mandolin. The nitrocellulose lacquer is thinly sprayed on the mandolin and then hand-buffed for a finish that is beautiful and lets the voice of the instrument speak clearly.

This is a great bang for the buck in an F-style mandolin. I had violin lessons for several years as a kid, but have played guitar for over 30 years and have a large collection of guitars. I decided it'd be nice to have a mandolin so I started hunting for one I liked. After playing a bunch of A-style and F-style instruments, with and without F-holes, both vintage Gibsons and new overseas models like Eastman, The Loar and Kentucky, I quickly decided this one felt and sounded best. However, it required a good set up from a local luthier to play well. I had a new bone nut installed, the frets leveled and the action lowered. Don't expect this one to play to its potential out of the box. It needs a good set up from a luthier. But with a set up, it's really a bargain.

Excellent mandolin for the money. A few set up tweaks and she sounds very, very nice. I have a Weber Yellowstone and this mandolin holds up well in comparison. I don't have to worry so much about it at jams and such and it is a fine player. I may switch out tailpiece down the road but the factory one is decent. A few very small details in QC by manufacturer(truss rod cover misaligned) but excellent where it matters the most. Watch for specials on Amazon, I picked mine up for less than $600.00. It's not a Gibson or a Weber but it's not over 3k either. I plan on keeping it a good while and figure it will only get better with playing time. Nice tone woods and fit and finish, excellent tone and playability.

As with any other mass produced instrument these do need a proper setup, but once that is done they are a great little instrument. I've had mine a little over a year now. I have had some work done on it but don't regret the purchase. I've removed the finish from the neck, added a tone guard, wrist rest and had the fret board scooped. Took it to a festival a while back and got some good feedback on it.

I got this out of the box, took one look at the knot in the solid maple back, stuck it back in the box and requested a return authorization number. And I'm not talking about a blemish from being cut close to a knot, but an actual knot that might fall out and leave a hole in the back if it wasn't held in by the varnish! I didn't even bother inspecting it any closer. With such a glaring flaw making it through quality control inspections as "good enough", I'm not sure I want to own any instrument from The Loar.

I didn't buy directly from Amazon this item in particular, but I own this and once you have it set up, by far it outshines most mandolins in this price range. It's exceptionally pretty with a flame back and neck and has a very good bark to cut through over acoustics during bluegrass circles. Comes with a foam case, but I prefer to keep mine in a hard case I bought separately since the foam case is a little unwieldy and doesn't have little compartments to keep things in. The slightly thicker neck than the 520 model is a good transition for guitarists who want to have a good quality instrument to work with. At a few of the bluegrass circles I participate in, other mandolinists like it, one almost preferring it over his Gibson.

Mine had frets that were not installed right and I had to return it. The sound was very nice and warm. The finish was great, especially the back. Bought a Kentucky instead and it arrived much better and plays better. I wouldn't take the chance with this one.
