It is designed to seal the chimney and keep bad weather, pests, and unconditioned air outside, keeping clean conditioned air inside.The Lock-Top II comes fully assembled. Its base mounts to the included sweep's ring which attaches to the flue tile with silicone sealant (included). A 30' stainless steel cable (included) drops down the flue and a hardware set mounts in the firebox. All Lock-Top II cap/dampers have an overall height of 11-3/8" and 3/4" mesh. Size: 17" W x 17" L x 11-3/8" H. Fits Inside Flue Sizes: 14" x 14" to 17-1/2" x 17-1/2". Cross-Sectional Area: 225" Sq. Mesh Size: 3/4". Note: Don't use Lock-Top dampers with gas logs - failure to open could cause carbon monoxide to back up into the house. So far, the damper/cap has worked very well. I had it professionally installed with good results. It’s sturdy and USA made. However, the Unlimited Warranty card I mailed to maker, in Iowa, was returned as undeliverable. When I went to maker’s “contact us” web site, I utilized their “send us an email” option to request an address to submit warranty card. They never returned the correspondence-so, no warranty protection. And, although the company quickly resolved the issue, I was initially sent a telescoping stove pipe instead of the damper/cap I ordered. A good product, fairly pricey because of the size I required - and no warranty record, in the event one might be needed. Still, product is a great solution to an open hearth fireplace that had its original damaged damper removed.
