I'm excited! It's very rare to be excited about a new product that I'm reviewing, but I am about this one! I found out about the Garmin Varia UT800 headlight after I got a Varia radar and LOVED it. It turned on automatically when I started my Garmin 1030 Plus (more on that later), it turns off automatically. I didn't have to fiddle around with a bunch of buttons. For those of us still on rim brakes and mechanical shifting, there's some joy to be had in an uncomplicated riding experience. I was surprised at the time that there didn't seem to be any other lights that other manufacturers made that worked in the same way.Until now! I was skeptical; a "smart" headlight, was this finally a competitor to the UT800? Magene is a brand I've heard of before and I should've given them more credence, even though technically the 1030 Plus is not on their list of compatible computers. Well, I'm here to report that the 1030 Plus works, and it works flawlessly. No additional apps needed, like many other cheaper "smart" lights on the market. That'd be unacceptable to me, I don't need another crappy app layer to deal with. I suspect if your computer supports ANT+ light connections, it will recognize this light.1600 lumens is extremely bright. The UT800, nominally, maxes out at 800 lumens. It feels noticeably heavier than other bike lights I've used in the 800-ish lumen range, with similar aluminum designs. Not significantly, but noticeably. It makes senes. It needs a bigger battery to pair with the brighter light.I was also skeptical that a light designed to work over the handlebars was going to work under/on a stem mount with a Gopro-style mount. Wrong again; the very well-constructed and kinda sexily matte-finish light has a thoughtful feature. There's a cap you pop off the top, you unscrew the mount from the bottom and move it to the top, swapping the cap to the bottom. Done. It looks like stock. Everything was very well made and impressively fitted.TL;DR: This is a beautiful light. It connects with a Garmin 1030 Plus flawlessly. It's bright, it's well-made, it's well-thought out, which, if you read my reviews, is what I really appreciate about a product.
