About this item

  • LIGHTWEIGHT: This plastic caliper is designed for easy use and intuitive design
  • DUAL MEASUREMENT: Features imperial (inches) and metric (centimetres)
  • DURABLE: The lightweight design does not sacrifice durability with its metal support rod along the back.

A caliper (British spelling also calliper) is a device used to measure the distance between two symmetrically opposing sides. A caliper can be as simple as a compass with inward or outward-facing points. The tips of the caliper are adjusted to fit across the points to be measured and after the caliper is removed, the distance is read by using a measuring tool (ruler) between the tips of the caliper. This invaluable tool comes in handy for many uses in the home, office, work-site, or academic setting

Review is for Marathon Plastic Plastic Vernier Caliper 15cm (0-6 inch) UPC 063442350287.The main reason I purchased this caliper because Marathon describes themselves as being a Canadian company. This unit is made in China. The main scale on the unit I received is displayed in centimeters, not milimeters.I purchased this plactic vernier caliper to measure guitar neck profiles and cavity dimensions without scratching the instrument finish. The quality control on the item I received was not very good. Upon first inspection the caliper jaws got stuck at 7cm. The reason is there were plastic molding tab burrs on the back side of the slider which stopped the jaws from moving past the burr.I was able to scrape down the burrs and move the jaws past that point and open to full scale. I also found plastic burrs along the flat edges of the measuring jaws preventing the caliper reading from zeroing out. Polishing the edge burrs off allowed the jaws to close to zero. Marathon quality Control apparantly does not do a final quality check. Also there is a significant gap between the vernier scale indexes and main scale indexes making it difficult to get an accurate measurement reading.I spent about 15 minutes fixing the burrs on the one I received so I'll keep it but will not buy another.YMMV

Updated ReviewI love the fact that it’s plastic, very lightweight and also an excellent price. But I'm reducing my rating to two stars as one of the jaws continues to flex further upward and the depth bar has bent. The non alignment of jaws is a problem.Mine the number 14 on the centimetre scale is poorly printed so are the indices near it (compared to the rest). I would’ve thought that printing numbers consistently on plastic was pretty simple.I would be happy to pay more if Marathon made a decent product.

I'm using this item to measure dimensions of watches and it works fine for that purpose.

This is a vernier caliper, just not a high precision one. Where a "real" (metal, expensive) tool has an adjustment wheel, this on has a plastic nub. No problem, I knew that when I bought it. I only wanted 0.1 mm accuracy and this delivers at least to that level. This is a good, casual caliper for around the house and many workshops. It's not an expensive super high-precision (0.001mm) tool.I chose this model specifically because I need to measure watch parts, and I wanted something that would not scratch cases or crystals. This is perfect for what I need, and at a very good price. I recommend it, for this price point.

This caliper is perfect for casual use. Of course it's not a precision caliper for measuring to 0.001", but for many things it's just what's needed. I have a lot of fancy expensive precision calipers, but I use plastic ones to keep in the garage, in the shed, in the car for those trips to Home Depot. They're really handy and you can't beat the price. Don't be fooled by the cheaper ones that are made in China and sell for 5 for $7.95. Those are junk. This one is made in Canada and is good.

The first one I got had to be opened about 1mm to set to zero. It was also shipped in a soft package and got bent during shipping. I sent it back.I got the replacement very quickly which was also shipped in a soft package but was not damaged. In trying it out the metric and standard measurements don't coincide. Not too good.

Very simple, yet very effective. I bought this set of calipers for measuring a few watch crystals that I wanted to replace. I've come to appreciate just how useful these are around the house.

This item is displayed with pictures giving a very strong impression that it's made of metal, while written in the description it's made of plastic, and in reality the item doesn't match the picture, it's totally not worth the price at all.
